Hi,
Devious has sent me several excellent photos to put on the forum. The first is taken just outside the main entrance to Whaley Bridge School and was taken about 1935. I'm suspect there are several of you out there who can put names to all these cheerful faces !
The second photo is in a different thread and shows Whaley Band.
I believe Devious has asked Santa for a scanner at Xmas. This will be great as I know there are lots more photos on lots of interesting and different subjects where these came from!
Cheers

Well it's certainly an improvement on the last school photograph that appeared on the forum.
The teacher and the children actually look human.

Here is a photo of Whaley School taken at the end of World War 1.
There are some well known Whaley names and people on this photo and I would like George to let us know if he recognises anyone.
Over to you, George.
R. S-S
I’ll put a copy in the photo library as well.

Hi R S-S
I don't recognise the children on this photo.
I haven't seen it before, I can't understand where it was taken can you shed any light on it. I recognise many names my mother for one but I have not seen a photo of her at this age. Another girl who I have seen on other photos does not look like her on this one. I have another photo of this class at a later date (which has people who are still living on it so I think it would be inappropriate to post it) are more recognisable.
Are you sure the information with this photo is photo is correct?

Hello George,
I hope you are keeping well; I have not heard from you for ages.
I know it’s a bit late to revive this subject but now we have Norm on board ship I thought he might introduce a new topic on the website entitled ‘Schools in Whaley Bridge’
We must not forget the school at Errwood but there were others in and around Whaley that deserve mention. Quite a few if memory serves me right.
But back to Whaley School for a moment I have found an old photo of it being built. The builders are a bit slow as usual and are still ‘in the trenches’, that’s foundations for the layman.
You will see also the Buxton Road Tea Rooms which has featured on so many of the photos that have found their way on here. All those that have been digesting the history of Whaley will know the Tea Rooms were of course the Whaley Bridge Mission or the Iron Church as it was known locally.
Anyway back to the construction of the school and you will note there is not a hard-hat in sight (nearly spelt that as site but stopped myself just in time).

It is 100 years since the school opened, I hear through my spies in the PTA that they are planning some sort of centennial celebrations. Photographs such as this would be brilliant, anything from the early days of the school, any history of its construction or the events surrounding the school opening would be great.
I could print copies from what is posted on here, or if anybody could help me put together a history board for the school fair the Male Hen would be a good venue.
Thanks

Looking at the 1918 school photo I see several names that are also on the Whaley War memorial. Marion Milnes maybe the daughter of Richard Milnes. Richard Milnes was killed in 1918 with the local 6th Notts Derbys. Richard had two young children so she may well be one of them. Other surnames on the memorial and the photo are Ashby Fletcher Bagshaw Hill Middleton Wild So one wonders how many of these children had lost there fathers at such a young age. Hi CT
When you put in the above post mentioning the name "Middleton" I took another look at the picture. I am in touch with Middleton who resides in Canada - her (Middleton) parents emigrated in the late 40's.
My question is, what do you think is the first name of the Middleton in the photograph? I know they lost a family member in the First World War but I am unsure if the child in the picture is the same one. Any ideas what his name is please?

I'd guess at Jeremy, although there do seem to be extra letters. Was Jienervy a popular name in 1910?

Anyway, the topic is Whaley Bridge Primary School, and my question was really whether anybody has interesting photos or stories about the school opening in 1911 that could be shared at the school fair, which is 18th June. Edited by user 07 June 2011 21:32:57(UTC)

Was I off topic discussing the school photo ?

I knew this would happen! There were two posts from** about image sizes, which I was replying to, and these have been deleted now!
The school photo is completely on topic, and the connection with the war memorial is quite an interesting link. A lot of the children who started school on the first day would have only just finished when the war ended.

Richard Milnes army service records confirm he had a daughter named Marion Milnes. So tragically the little girl in the photo had just or was about to lose her father as he was killed in 1918.
