This is the best possible the detail is just not there
If you have the original cutting re-scan at not less than 300dpi
600dpi if you have the option, also set to Greyscale Mode.
Then email result to me.

Hello Mrs Curtaintwitcher,
I am looking forward to your article.
I have a photo of Sergeant Beard if you want it.
I think it was definitely taken on the same day as yours but with different people on mine.
Do you want me to post it on here or do you want me to send a copy just to you?

I see that the ‘Only Fools and Horses/Whaley Bridge connection has emerged once more.
Surely the soldier third from the left on the back row is Cassandra’s dad.
Can’t wait for Del Boy and Uncle Albert.

I have the same post card of this group of Senior NCOs of “H” (Whaley Bridge) Company 6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters take at Scarborough Racecourse in 1909.
The Pioneer Sergeant is of course 306 John Beard from Whaley Bridge and to his left is Colour-Sergeant Instructor 4440 William Seaton who transferred to “H” (Whaley Bridge) Company in 1909 from the 1st Battalion. William Seaton held the rank of Colour-Sergeant in the 1st Battalion and served with No 1 Company Mounted Infantry in South Africa. He was recommended for the VC but was awarded the DCM for his actions in the Transvaal on 28th October 1901.
Also serving with “H” Company at that time was:-
283 William Fidler (far left) who was awarded an acting armourer certificate in December 1908 and the LSM in January 1909. William enlisted into the 2nd Volunteer Battalion The Sherwood Foresters on 13th January 1891 and served with the number 3176. He was discharged in July 1916 aged 48.
316 Col-Sergt W Hidworth (2nd from right) was discharged from the TF Reserve in 1911.
The other men in Tunic Order are Sergeant Marksmen, but their identify has not been determine to date
cheers Mike

He was posted to the 21st Battalion on 1st January 1917 and was renumbered 331176 in April 1917. John Beard was discharged due to termination of engagement on 11th April 1917 aged 50 having served for 31 years in the Sherwood Foresters. Re. 1915 Whaley soldier - can you identify the soldier in khaki sitting in the front of the photo? My grandfather was in the Forresters at this time and also played in the Forresters band. He was a regular soldier. Does anyone know of him, his name was Jim Depledge? His brother, John (Jack), served in the 5th Dragoon Guards in South Africa about the same time.

Hello Jack Tarr
Welcome to the forum
Yes I am familiar with James Depledge and Eliza Waddington, as some other members of the forum will be too, but I suspect you will already have the photos that I have of him. |
