Hello
Here's the next instalment of photos. I doesn't look at all like Whaley to me - looks like Crewe junction on a bad day
I wonder what the two chaps at the bottom of the photo were talking about

The photograph is taken from Old Road looking approx NNW. In the foreground is the junction between the Stockport-Buxton railway and the stub of the Cromford & High Peak that ran between the gas works and the canal basin and adjacent mills. Whaley station is just off the right of the picture. In the middle distance is the colliery that stood where Wharf road is now. Above the colliery and to the right are the houses at the bottom of Reservoir Road. The wall running diagonally across the picture to the left of of the colliery is about where Forge Road is now, and the area to the left of that is now the schoolyard .
PS Great Picture - Thanks Gnatalee Edited by user 30 June 2009 10:26:55(UTC)

Hi RB
Thanks for that - couldn't get my head round anything on that picture - it looks nothing like Whaley to me !! I find it hard to believe now how much was going on in Whaley industry-wise at a time when it was still a village !

Thank goodness someone knows what they are looking at! Like you Gnats, I couldn't recognise anything, but now it's been explained, I can sort of see where we are. Thanks RB!

I think that the photograph was taken from here:
The railway junction was here;
and the colliery was here:
