and a very good morning to you R S-S !

Glad you are pleased with my input - the Goyt Valley is something I feel a strong link to as some family lived there for a while. I like to 'dig' for any information I can find and am happy to share it where appropriate.

In the meantime here is some more info I found from the Footpath's Society report dated 1929. I'll add some other info later when I've tidied it up.

cheers for now

Gail

ps added  map dated Aug 1930

So now that the labour force was in place it was time to get to work.

Shallcross has kindly scanned the contracts for various elements of the work but only 4 of these were of much interest to the local people although the others were of equal importance. One of these we shall discuss later.

The 4 main contracts (don’t forget Errwood was 30 years away) were:

1/ The Construction of Fernilee Dam: (Lehane,Mackenzie & Shand Ltd).

2/ The Filter House: (Lehane,Mackenzie & Shand Ltd).

3/ The Suspension Bridge: (Joseph Parks and Son).

4/ The Cottages: (Z & W Wade Ltd)

I’ll give as much detail as I can on each element of the works but much of it will be by photographic record.
We have comparison figures for all the reservoirs and some of these were contained in the last of Gail’s articles.

Many photos of the works have already been on the forum in other threads so I apologise if I repeat some of what has gone on before; but Norm will want these all in the same topic so that he does not have to spend hours searching the forum.

Tenders invited by Stockport was advertised in the Manchester Guardian for the above contracts  - however I don't feel it necessary to publish those.

Further to shallcross' post #11 re The Hollows,  I thought you might like to see an ad, which appeared in the Manchester Guardian a few times. It seems it was a guest house at some time.

Great photo shallcross.
I have attached a compilation of photos I retrieved from the internet before the reservoirs - this was the only way I could save them. Don't worry I did check for copyright !
I have numbered some of the pics (1-11) and thought the great minds on here (!)  would like to test themselves as to where each one is located within the valley........I haven't a clue, so can't comment.
Over to you.............

As Gail has shown with her contribution from the Footpath Preservation Society’s report for 1929 there was concern about the loss of the footpaths that crossed the River Goyt and the Goyt Valley itself.

The water Board had to address this problem and so Contract No 7 was awarded to Joseph Parks and Son of Northwich to design and construct a footbridge across the valley that could be used when the valley was flooded.

I must assume that the bridge was constructed before the reservoir was flooded as it would have been a much easier task. Even so when it was put in place it was high above the bottom of the valley.

It was called ‘The Footbridge at Head of Reservoir’ and was of the ‘Stiffened Suspension Type’.
The walkway was ‘Grill Flooring’ and it spanned 140 feet and was 4ft 6 inches wide.
It was beautiful.
Here are a couple of photos of it:

Great pictures of the suspension Bridge RSS, and great pictures from Gritch as well.

Gritch's pictures 12,13,14and 15 show Errwood hall and it being demolished. Such a shame - it was a lovely building. see http://www.whaleybridge..../errwoodhall/errwood.htm

Pictures 7, and 9 and possibly 6(?) show the ruins of the Powder Mill - see http://www.whaleybridge.net/localhistory/powdermill/powdermill2.htm to see the walls in 9 as they were when the building was in use.

Not sure about the others.

Thanks for that information Shallcross.

re. pic 11.......is that white blob to the left of the trees, top right hand corner, Intake Farm ? If it is, I suppose it's the nearest I can get to having a photo of the place!!

Gail

Yes the white blob is Intake, I have a clearer image somewhere be patient.

This picture is Shaw stile before construction, so looking towards Long Hill The wall running across the picture just above the tents is Cromford High Peak railway which is what you walk on today up the side of the reservoir, the road running across below is to The Powder Mill and Errwood Hall with the smaller road going down to the left to The Hollows, you can follow the walls of the old road past Shaw stile as described by GJ on the other thread.

If you look carefully at the Farm you can see a chimney at the far right of the farm outbuildings , that was the old house before they built the new one above.

Also on this picture above and over to the right you can just make out Brownhills farm in the clump of  trees with Calf Hey Wood on the right.

Fantastic photos of the suspension bridge - it was a magnificent piece of structural engineering.

Also, it's great seeing photos of the valley before the reservoirs, no doubt we will see more as this thread progresses.

This attached articles appeared in the Manchester Guardian in February & March 1931 regarding an intended photographic survey whereby photographic scenes of the valley before and after construction would be presented to local libraries. There may yet  be more unseen photographs lurking in some dark storage cupboard - perhaps it might be worth chasing up if this photographic survey ever took place.

Further to my earlier post #20

I have attached, for your information, a full list of Stockport's proposals which went before Parliament. These appeared in the London Gazette November 22nd 1929. As we know Westminster approved the scheme the following May.

Once again you are putting some great stuff on here Gail.

The latest from the London gazette is really very interesting.

With regards to official photographs taken of the Valley and handed over to local libraries, I have not heard about this but there is certainly an official collection of professional photographs of the Reservoir construction.
I don’t think I have the full collection, although I might have, but I will put some of them on here as we go on.

Stockport Photographic Society was founded in 1890 and is one of the oldest photographic societies in the country. A long shot, I know, but I have emailed the president of the society asking for his comments and suggestions on whether this 'survey' ever took place. Watch this space.........

update: edited reply received from St'pt photographic society

"Hi, As far as I know all the pre ww2 records are deposited in the central library in Stockport but I do know we have a box of old stuff which resides with our secretary.I have asked him to have a look for you, cheers"

I have his contact telephone number which I deliberately left out along with a couple more personal details, so if anything comes of this, I could pass that information on via email contact rather than through the forum. The compilation of images in my earlier post #30 came from Stockport Images archives, part of the library website.

Hi Gail,

I shall ask Jon to pass you my email address.

I would be very obliged to see any information you can unearth.

As it is a bit hot at the moment but the forecast is for cooler weather in a couple of days so I shall continue this thread then.
