This extract taken from "Peak District: Northern and Western Moors" by Roly Smith, Andrew Bibby 2005, confirms your speculation. "Errwood Reservoir....... completed in1968 to supply water to Stockport. It followed the slightly larger Fernilee Reservoir, lower down the valley, which was completed thirty years earlier. The construction of the Fernilee dam saw the demolition of the hamlet of Goyt's Bridge and the partial destruction of stately Errwood Hall"

ps. the registration on the car in the photo looks like VU 4345. If this is correct then the carwas registered in Manchester prior to 1934 (the VU series was allocated to Manchester) - from 1934 2 letter registrations became 3 letters ie AVU, in 1935 became BVU, in 1936 became CVU and so on. As to the make ....???

As Gail has kindly confirmed, with yet again excellent research, the hamlet of Goyt’s Bridge was demolished in the 1930’s in readiness for the construction of Errwoood Reservoir some 30 years later. The reason for the demolition was given by the Stockport Water Board that they were afraid of pollution into the Fernilee Reservoir. This is also the reason for the demolition of the grand Errwood Hall.
Apparently no one had told the Water Board of the existence of septic tanks.
Anyway here are four of the traditional view of Goyt’s Bridge which shows the famous Stepping Stones; these are all scanned from postcards that I have collected:
And here is a snapshot you will not see on any postcard:
Gail,
Fascinating stuff on the car. I’ll find out the exact number on the registration plate.
Meanwhile we are still waiting for some input from Buggyite who seems to be taking a long time on sorting this model of car out. Perhaps he is loosing his touch.

The car has an exhaust pipe, rather than a chimney, and therefore I cannot help in identification.
I don't think it was the Bean that was sold at the auction, though.
Perhaps the driver is Miss Esme Preston, adopted by the Grimshawes, who was reported to enjoy driving one of the motor cars
As nobody else has offered to identify it yet, I will say that it a Sunbeam from the mid to late 1920s. Edited by user 28 October 2011 17:00:28(UTC)

The pictures are all fantastic, I was given a tour of the works during the 1980's when comparing it to White Hall Centre for a college course White Hall (on Long Hill) does not have mains water or sewage and had its own Treatment Plant.
Keep up the good work all.
Thanks Lady M.

I am told the car on posting 101 was registered in Manchester in 1932/3. I have tried to copy it so I might be able get more information but was unsuccessful. Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Hi George,
I just copied it to my photo album in the following way:-
Put the curser over the photo in post 101 and double or right hand click, you get a box of commands. Highlight COPY then go to your photo album and again double or right hand click and the box of commands now has PASTE in it. Highlight that and the photo goes into your album. You can do what you want with it then.
Hope this helps.

George, I've just done it again to see if it works and it does!
Were you putting the curser directly over the photograph???

George try this.
Place the mouse pointer over the picture and press the right mouse button once. The first highlighted command should be Save Picture As... place the mouse pointer over that and it should go blue, press the left mouse button once and it should go to My Pictures where you can save it.
Hope that works.

Hello George,
At the moment this is the best shot I can find of the car driver.
He had just passed this group of young ladies, parked his mystery car and accompanied them across the famous Stepping Stones at Goyt’s Bridge.
It suspiciously looks to me as though he is letting them go across first to determine whether any of them fall in before he gets his own shoes (purchased from a well known retailer at Market Street, Whaley Bridge at a very reasonable price no doubt) wet
I’ll have a look for a front on shot a bit later today.

Hi RSS
I think that man is your dad, I recognise the shoes as being the ones I sold him in April 1930.

Re Barbara Frith's Post #105. Lady Madonna is not too hot on this new technology stuff and has asked me to give her email address to Barbara so they can chat about Barbara's father Horace Oldham. I have no objection to Barbara having my email address so I can put the two in touch if that is easier.
Thanks
Mrs C

I can remember that we all stood in line along the pavement outside Whaley School waiting for the posh car that had the Duke and Duchess of Kent in as they went up to officially open Errwood Reservoir. I could just about see her hat!

It's been a while since I posted on this topic and having just looked through some images of the Goyt Valley dated around the 1930's, I thought it would be worthwhile supplying a link so others can view them. The images are on this site ........http://interactive.stockport.gov.uk/stockportimagearchive/slideshow.aspx .
Put 'Goyt Valley' in search box and you will then notice 6 pages of images that are available and others that will be added soon. None are in copyright so they might be worthwhile adding to the photo gallery. Hope you like them.

This is quite an interesting old photograph taken before the flooding of the Valley, this shows the ford below Bunsall Farm which you can just make out at the top of the picture, the Suspension bridge was later constructed at this point and it was this crossing that determined the position of the bridge. shallcross attached the following image(s): |
