Please find below information on a Derbyshire heritage project that I have volunteered to help with. My role is to contact community groups in the Whaley area  to find out if they are planning to do anything to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in 2014, the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, in 2015, or the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War in 2018.

I am also trying to get some idea of WW1 or WW2 memorabilia, photographs and stories held by local people (not just relating to people who were in the military, but also to our industries, farming, evacuees, churches, local transport, community groups, etc)  to paint a picture of life on our home front during both wars.

There is a project website where you can see a bit more information :-

http://derbyshirelives.wordpress.com/

If any local groups would like to send me their ideas for events, I would be delighted to hear from you.  Please also advise if you would need any funding.

If local people have any wartime photographs or memorabilia, I would very much like to hear from you.

I have to receive all information by 20 March so that I can produce a report  to show what I have discovered in the Whaley Bridge area.

Thank you.

The photograph above is of a chapel that was built at the Whitehall Centre in 1940 by evacuee boys from Guernsey.

This sounds interesting.

Why not turn it into an event like the East Lancashire Railway "War Weekend" or combine the event with the "Steam weekend" that is held annually to add a degree of authenticity?

With the amount of historical knowledge and pictures held by contributors to this forum it could be made to look very realistic.

What do others think?

Hi Gillian,

I have an old exercise book and it contains the hand written account of a soldier who went through the First World War from almost day one to virtually the end of that terrible event. It is very harrowing in places but that was just how it was. I have the gentleman's War Medals and discharge papers as well as some photographs of him. He also 'left' me a wonderful surgeon's case complete with all the tools of wartime made from rosewood and inlaid with Mother of Pearl but unfortunately some kind individual relieved him of it just before he died.

I would be willing to lend them to you but you will understand they are very precious to me so I would ask you to promise me that you would look after them.
