At the library I was asked by a gentleman from Huddersfield, who is compiling his family tree, if we had any information about the presence of the Lancashire Fusiliers at Shallcross in c 1940. He is researching a relative who was apparently posted here on a gunned look-out post.  The relative had mentioned a very bad winter whilst he was stationed here.
I recalled that we hold 2 photos of the look-outpost guns as they were at a later time and also a mention of the Lancashire Fusiliers being at Shallcross in notes for a library exhibition written by a Mrs Lomas in 1968.
Can anyone shed any more light on where the guns and look-out post were situated?
I am attaching the photos and notes for you to see.

I have been told by a reliable local source that the photos of the guns were not taken at Whaley Bridge. I am sorry if I have mislead everyone but would still like to hear of any more information.

Another piece of information from library visitor.

My only artefact of my Dad's stay at Whaley Bridge is a Cassell's Pocket English Dictionary (only recently discovered) with this inscription inside the the front cover "Frank Greenhalgh, 354/39 of S/L Regt R.A., Shallcross Manor, Whaley Bridge, 19.9.41".

Does anyone know of Mr Frank Greenhalgh?

Thanks: 1 times
the Lancashire Fusiliers at Shallcross Manor only had a Lewis gun but they had a very large search light that used a few times when German air craft were about, I dont remember the Lewis being fired.  I think it was the 14th battalion of the Lankies which later became Royal Artillery,it was a long time ago and memory fades
