A quick question.I was driving past Sunlan today on my way back from walking the dog,as i was sat at the lights I noticed initials E B on the gates next to sunlan.I just wondered what it meant, also what did Sunlan used to be before it was a chinese and JJ's Bistro.
P.S. I ate once in JJ's I liked it,the wife didn't.

And long before that, My Lord, it was Tommy Bagshawe's shop.
There’s a photo knocking about of Tommy’s I’ll look it out and put it on here for you.

Eddie was (and I guess still is) a great chef. I believe he is now somewhere Cheadle way. We had our Wedding Breakfast at Eddies. |

As promised, My Lord,
This is a photo of Tommy’s shop first put on the forum by Gnatalee.
I am not sure if that is Gnatalee carelessly crossing the road.

Tommy Bagshaw stood in the shop doorway.
Everybody of a certain age who visited Bagshaws will remember Tommys sweet tray on the counter with everything under glass of course just in case. shallcross attached the following image(s): |

Well done Shallcross what a good photo of Tom and his wife. I think she was Amy and the girl who lived with them was also called Amy (Bedall??). The photo looks older than it really is, Tom lost his leg to a German shell I remember the year after Bill Garlick lost his during the same conflict.

Regarding the post by G.Jackson I have to report that it was, indeed, Amy Bedall who lived with Mr and Mrs Bagshawe - she was their niece and worked in the shop for a while. I have only found this out this week as Amy's daughter is visiting England with her sister - they both live in Canada - Amy and her husband Harold emigrated to Canada in the 40's I believe. Amy's daughter remembered, on a previous visit, meeting "the man who used to own the shoe shop which is now Footsteps" - that must be George !
It has to be said that I have pointed the sisters in the direction of this forum and the Whaley Bridge Local History site as they are extremely interested in the history of Whaley and surrounding area.

Hi Gnats
I have just been reading your last posting and trying to place Amy Beddall but being unsuccesful. I have a problem that being born here a long tme ago I know a lot of ladies by there maiden names and a lot of ladies by there married names, this confuses me at times especially since I find difficulty accessing my memory bank. Do you know if Beddall is her maiden or married name.
Best wishes

Hi George
Beddall was Amy's maiden name - she married Harold Middleton. Her brother was George Beddall, there was also a John Beddall - I don't know all the names of the family though. Apparently, Amy worked at the shop whilst staying with her Aunt and Uncle (Mr & Mrs Bagshwawe) for a while.
Best wishes

Good evening to you Gnatalee and George,
I don’t recall anyone living with Tommy Bagshaw at all but maybe they did. I may be able to find out in the morning when I have more time.
George Bedall lived with his wife Mona in the Council Houses on Buxton Road up Long Hill.
They had a daughter Carol who was very badly disabled and she hardly ever went out of the house. She did have a job in the offices at Z & W Wade who were very good to her.
She did meet some one and eventually married him. I think she died suddenly during the first week of her marriage.
A very tragic tale indeed.
It has been somewhat nippy in Horwich End today but not quite as bad as the photo below which just shows Tommy’s shop and the icicles dangerously hanging from the gutters and potentially threatening any tobacco or toffee customers.

I think Carol had a brother called Clive.
Did they also live in Jodrell Rd or Williamson Rd at one point?

Correct, Clive was a reporter by profession. I presume he started on the Buxton Advertiser but worked his way up. You could hardly work your way down, especially if you could spell. Last year readers were invited to the Buxton doctor's practice for their "FLUE" jabs. This was in printing over an inch high. Some of the B.A. obituaries make me gasp by their wording, one recently was so badly put it was funny. It wouldn't be funny for the family of the lady concerned.
The last couple of lines have been deleted by me because I don't want to upset anyone. G.J. Edited by user 08 December 2011 09:57:43(UTC)

Yes G.J. Clive Beddall finished up as the Editer of a magazine called the "Grocer" for many years until his retiremant. The last time I saw him was when his mother died a few years ago.
