Hi

My wife, came home from Chapel memorial park today, and had overheard an interesting conversation between a council Gardner and some one.

Apparently on one of the building sites currently being worked on , work has been halted due to a 1st world war tank being dug up....

Presumably if correct i would have thought it was the Feroddo site?. Maybe they mad the brake linings for them....??

so wondered if anyone knows anything about this ....

I don't think Herbert Frood had built the Ferodo factory until the 1920s, so its unlikely they would have made brake linings for them.

After the end of the Great War, a number of tanks were donated to various town councils to display, as a kind of thanks for that town's war efforts. I do not know if Chapel RDC was one of these, but there was one on a plinth at the top of Brabyns Park in Marple for several years.

Perhaps what was being referred to wasn't an army tank as such, but an old water tank dating from that period.

It was founded in 1897 by Herbert Frood (1864-1931),[1] with manufacturing starting in Gorton in 1901 and moving to Chapel en le Frith, Derbyshire in 1902.[2] Ferodo has been a world leading company dedicated to the design and manufacture of friction products, especially braking materials. It was the first company to use asbestos for brake linings.[3]

Ferodo UK became part of Turner & Newall in 1926. It had a factory at Chapel-en-le-Frith and in 1964 opened another at Caernarfon.[4]

Hi Buggite.......had checked on Wiki before posting , as wondered if the factory in chaple was up and running before the war started...seems so

The good wife confirmed whe definitly heard WW1 Tank...(and thought of me so listened in ) , the chap mentioned work was being halted due to the historical significance of the find and was due to be excavated properly by a team of archeologist ...

According to Grace's Guide:

"WWI. Produced brake linings for armoured cars, tanks and motor transport."

http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Herbert_Frood_Co

They were presented with a tank after the war.

From the photograph below it looks as if it could be a female Mk IV, of which 5 survive, so, if it has been found, it is a significant discovery.

Im gonna pop up and have a chat with the works foreman....see if i can glean any info...

if its all true ...suppriesed the local press are not hot onto it , given its the centennial year etc.

Hi Moogie,

I overheard some people talking about this subject at the WW1 exhibition in Chapel town hall this evening. I didn't really hear a lot of what was said, but I did manage to catch that "if anything's found, we'll give it to Salford". I assume by this they meant the university for digging up, but who knows? There was also talk of the builders throwing something in a skip, and covering something up with hardcore. Think

If they have found the tank that was given to Ferodo though, then it's obviously an important bit of local history that should be preserved, as should Herbert Frood's shed if that's still around. Although it's strange that Ferodo would bury it in the first place.

This is the first I've heard of it, and I'm surprised that there hasn't been anything in the press. Surely they should take the proper procedures in excavating an artefact of such significance especially on the centenary of the war.

Anyway, if you get time tomorrow, the exhibition in Chapel is worth a look at!

"Salford" could be referring to the Imperial War Museum North.
The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct.

whens the Chapel exhibition on?...

As for burying the tank, I had a random conversation with a lad at the Football museum in Town as he was saying  that they were getting in and a football in from the Well known Christmas Day football matches from WW1.

he went on to tell me how his grandad used to say there was a tank buried in his local park....might have been Collyhurst i think...he said he had been saying it for years, and know one belived him. Apparently lots of councils were donated tanks and heavy equipment to display as memorials as thanks to areas that had a hand in building them. Then as time passed some were scrapped or directly put straight into the ground as they had no way of moving such heavy gear...as the idea of having them on show fell out of favour in the late 1920's and as actual stone memorials were put up ect..

its a real dissapointment that something local like this is being kept under wraps.... i have still heard nothing other than these couple of posts

thanks

Not a tank, not in Whaley Bridge, but might be of interest
