Greetings and salutations! I regularly walk around Fernilee Reservior and am alarmed at how low the water level currently is. Despite rain over the last few weeks the level has continued to drop. Stone walls can now be seen the like of which is usually only observed when we are a long dry summer. Does anyone know what is going on? Is it being deliberately drained for maintenance or is it simply leaking? Any comments gratefully recieved. Thank you

I think it is because we have had a very extended dry period, and although there has been some rain over the past couple of weeks, it has certainly not been the normal amount of rain we would expect to see in this area.

I believe that about 15 years ago the water board installed a 24 inch pipe from the reservoir all the way to either Disley or even further, to near Simpson's corner on High Lane to move great amounts of water from there to it's distribution centre. This means the level of water in the reservoir depends more on what they take out than what goes in with rain etc. P.S. There was a massive leak in the 24 inch pipe earlier this year near Chalker's snooker Hall, this flooded the A6.

The construction of the M60 Ring Road necessitated a reduction in the capacity of the Audenshaw Reservoir. As compensation, North West Water (now United Utilities) put a large pipe underground from Fernilee Reservoir, through Whaley Bridge and Furness Vale, to Audenshaw Reservoir. From time to time the company transfers water from Fernilee to Audenshaw. See: http://www.wbags.co.uk/Pages/history.htm
