Thanks Tarboat for posting your photos of Furness Brickyard. The tiles in the foreground of the second photo were rejects from manufacturers in The Potteries. They were ground up and used in the process of making firebacks. The tiles were often intact and I believe some may be seen in bathrooms and kitchens around Furness Vale !

Yes of course there is still plenty of interest in local history but like many other previous contributors, I now only visit the Forum occasionally.

If memory serves me right the gentleman there with the spade is Ambrose. A really great Furness Vale character !

I am long gone from the Whaley Bridge area - about 60 years - however I did come across a notebook of my father's which contained working details of the R.E. Knowles Fireclay works at the end and just after the WW2 and only of interest to a very small niche audience. It may be that niche audience reads this forum. It was more than a bit tatty but I have put the pages together and scanned them. They can be found at the following link :

Hi Goneaway,
Many thanks for taking the time to save this piece of local history and make it accessible to others.

Thanks so much for taking the time to scan and post this diary. It as absolutely fascinating and gives an insight to the working of the kilns at that time.

I would very much appreciate a copy Tarboat. I had bookmarked the link intending to download it for the Furness Vale History Society archives.  Would you mind emailing it to me parabuild@btopenworld.com

Many thanks

David
