A bit better. I believe David Bailey, a little known picture taker, always did black and white because he said no colour photo was true. It's like when you walk into a shop like Comet and all the tellys are showing the same channel yet they all are different.

Colour is as good as your PC screen and your eyes. Greyscale probably shows the most detail, but people like colour.

I think there may be a limit to the size of picture you can upload, a width of about 750 is good for this place.

Can you add any names to these?  I'm a Whaley School Old Girl myself, but it's about my era, I'm sure I'll know some of them. I think I might have spotted Phil Daye?

Hi all fans

shallcross is it 1967 or 1968 or is it year 1967-68. If you are on it then it is well after my time!

Norm, oh you like to live dangerously . David Bailey does colour but I remember him stating that he loves b/w but people expect colour..

Hi snoops

Yes you are right and I am wrong. David Bailey does quite a lot in colour. As you say I do remember some programme or article where he sort of denounced it and said he likes black and white.

I stand, or mainly sit, corrected.

Mrs Curious

Yes I am on the photo and it will be 1967 - 68 as there were two year groups together

Snoops

I can name most so from the Top

Row One - Robert Thompson, Chris Eyre, Nigel Salisbury, Terence Beard, Andrew Morton, Trevor Mason,Roy Williamson, Andrew Boothby, Andrew Bailey

Row Two - Haydn Jones, Peter Lomas, Tim Hoggard, Chris Simpson, Phil Day, Ian Wain, Roger Hodgeson, Robin Cridland, Andrew Longson, Martin Isherwood, Simon Phillips

Row Three - Alaister Bell , Tina Thorpe, Ann Hill, Elizabeth Knowles, Pam Bate, Margaret Cadwallader, Viv West, Christine Tolly, Jean Stenson, Margaret Harding, John Fletcher

Row Four - Sally Ann Shatwell,  Margaret Hughes  Kathy Kennedy, Sharon Hughes, Ken Higginbotham, David Hartley, Deborah Wooley , Elaine Ashby, Helen Ritchie, Judith Searson

I apologise for forgetting the three, someone will remember

And if this helps The School was built on a piece of land called Lower Wood aquired on 18th August 1840

Built in1847 - 48 The first Headteacher on record was Mr Peter Allen in 1864

Mr West was appointed in 1941 and retired in 1963

The younger teacher on the Photo would probably not have been Pop West but Mr Arthur Oldfield who was head for 36 years any one in their 70s now  will remember him.

The Oldest School in Whaley was Elnor Lane School, Thomas Ouff left money in his will (died 1629) but records for the school start 1721, now wills are on line at Ancestry.co.uk someone could check it out.

Hello to you my good friend Frankie,

Absolutely brilliant photo; I presume you are on it. I must say Pop did send a slight shudder through me when I saw him even though I did not attend that school.

I'm not sure what has gone wrong with the previous post, on my browser it mainly looks like HTML? gobbledegook.

Furthermore, the parts of it that I can decipher looks just like R.S-S's post number 2 from way back.

If you can repost it, Chenchen, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Not too sure just what is going on here Buggyite.

You have a better memory than me but I have just checked on post no 2 on this thread and it would appear to be word for word the same as my post.
Apart from the goggledegook that is.

Hi

This may be one for Mr TrustedIT

I have had a conversation with R.S-S. And to be fair Robert is a bit concerned why a post of his has been copied, and some rather strange code added (which is not even the source code of the post). And then followed by a plug for what I believe are in fashion boots, although I doubt if I would wear them, more for the female sort of lady type.

It is certainly a strange first post, whether it intentional or a system malfunction maybe only you can answer.

If it is intentional well

I'd say that the "Ugg Boots Ugg...." bit is chenchen's sig as it appears below the line.

Is it possible the source code is as it might appear in a different browser to Internet Explorer or Firefox (the old AOL one, for example), so chenchen inadvertently posted the gibberish, instead of what he or she meant to write?

This picture (73) is now restored and repaired on my website with the exception of the unfortunate little boy with no face 4th from right - beyond my help.

I came across this website via Facebook after looking at Taxal & Fernliee School page.  It was great to see all these old school photos. I come from Whaley and indeed attended Horwich End School, as did my brothers and my Grandma.

I wondered if anyone had any class photos of Horwich End, circa 1966 - 1972?  My class left in 1972 (I think).  I have lost all my old photos and consequently only have one class photo now.  I will post it up if anyone is interested in seeing it.  It is Mr Hartley's class probably around 1971 or 72 - I'd love to see any others as I've only been able to track one down and we must have had one a year or so taken.

This is a great forum and it's brilliant to be able to hear about all sorts of places being discussed that I had completely forgotten about - such as the Jug and Spoon down by the river (now I will have to plan an overdue trip to my roots).  Will enjoy many trips down memory lane whilst I catch up on other threads.

Dear FormerlyofWhaley,

May I be the first to welcome you to the forum. It is great and getting better thanks to Norm who is doing a fine job and not getting the recognition he deserves.

Hi FormerlyofWhaley

May I be the second to welcome you to the forum.   I haven’t got any class photos of Horwich End (1966-1972). I went to Whaley School at that time and I would love to see your one and only class photo, I probably grew up with some of your classmates or met up with them at Whaley Youth Club, Spark’s Discos, Jumble Sales at the Trinity……. oh we did live it up then didn’t we?

Your’re right about the Forum being brilliant and it’s getting better all the time thanks to the hard work of the regular contributors who seem to have endless knowledge and photos of old Whaley which they very kindly share with us all.

Hello G.J.

Lovely photograph, especially nice to see "Boss" Oldfield, who my Dad often mentioned.      I have to ask, why "Boss"? Was he called "Boss" to his face or was it a nick-name? The youngsters look great - are they all the same age group?
