Up at Taxal church yesterday looking for several graves of relatives but found out later that some may be unmarked. Does anyone know if there is plan of the grave yard that shows where people are buried?

Hi Kid
Yes there will be a grave plot plan if it was a cemetary it would be the local authority as it is a church depending if it is old yard or new yard, new yard the present incumbant, old yard I would think Cheshire county records Office at Chester unless it hasn't been deposited and that to is with the present incumbant.
Good Hunting, all mine in Taxal seem to have headstones although the donkey isn't helping again in the old yard. |

Hi
I've got some info on the burial plan at Taxal, if you can let me know the surnames you're looking for, I'll have a look and let you know where they are if I can.

Some years back my daughter then a sixth form student retyped the records for “New Mills Heritage Centre” from the graves records books concerning several New Mills churches.
The now derelict church next door to the Town Hall contained one detail that sticks in my mind it simply said …”Boys Hand” often wonder what the story was?
Another noticeable feature was the high number of people from the same families buried within days or weeks of each other, no doubt the great flue pandemic.
Looking back she was requested to just type lists, it should of course have been typed as a database. It did take months to do and was I am sure not a cheerful project for a teenager.

Thanks Mrs Curious, The main grave I am looking for is for Charles Jarvis who died in 1965. I have been told that there is no headstone or marker and that it was thought to be somewhere close to the front of the Church. Cheers

Hi Carrbrook K
If its 1965 and near the Church are you sure its not a cremation, because the majority of new buriels at that time would have been in the new yard, unless it was an established family grave, the plots near the church were always filled first, even the well remembered Vicar Samuel Evans grave is in the lower yard. |

Shallcross, I was told it was a grave but you could be right. I noticed lots of plaques with faitly modern dates and expect these to be cremations. We have a family plot which I found close to the church but its from the other sside of the family. I will ask some more questions this weekend. Cheers

My grandad and grand-nan are buried in Taxal graveyard - grandad in 1962 and Grand-nan in 1968. They are in the bottom left most corner in the graveyard to the left of the lane as you come up it from the river. I'd say 1965's graves would also be in that area - it's very very delapidated though, very neglected. As Shallcross mentioned, graves near the church door are most likely to be crematory headstones. Jarvis is a very well-known Whaley name, so it's not impossible there are some living relatives who might know exactly where your Charles Jarvis was buried. |
Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others -even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. |

Hi
Sorry to jump on the back of this post but I'm trying to find where abouts in the graveyard two of my ancestors are buried. I came across this post when I was googling
I have a John Barton buried at St James on the 28th of July 1853 & his wife
Martha Barton buried at St James on the 28th of May 1852
They both lived at Wainstones Farm in Hope.
I'm wondering if somebody could tell me how I could go about getting the burial plot for these two in order to see if there is a gravestone there.
Kind Regards
Olie Barton

Hi Olie
The inscription goes:
In Memory of
John Barton of
Wainstones in the township
of Fernilee
who died July 23rd 1853
Aged 68 years
Also Martha his wife
who died May 25th 1852
Aged 71 years
also
John their son
who died Novbr 7th 1810
aged 8 months
The headstone is close to the eastern wall of the graveyard (adjacent the cart track), more or less in line (ie looking directly away from) the porch of the church.

Hi Oliebarton,
If you have not already done so I would recommend a trip up to Wainstones.

It is a rather bleak spot, but from around the area there are some fine views across the Goyt Valley, Combs Moss, Castle Naze and the Combs Valley. In early summer the Curlews fill the air with their distinctive cries.

The road has been improved in the last few years, but it is still of course single track with (few) passing places whether you come up from Elnor Lane or Combs. I had my first car crash many moons ago on my way up there. Not my fault I hasten to add. Edited by user 10 November 2014 14:08:50(UTC)
