Snoopy and Buggythug have brought to my attention the fact that the original thread on this topic cannot be read. This is apparently caused by my deleting the first posting (a notice which had become redundant). I am repeating below, the latest posting and will add any future items to this replacement thread.
The Autumn programme of Furness Vale Local History Society is as follows:
Tuesday 7th September "Crosses Of The High Peak" presented by David Frith.
Tuesday 5th October "Derbyshire Diaries" by Ruth Gordon
Tuesday 2nd November "Pack Horses In The Peak" by Donald Reid
Tuesday 7th December "Restoration of Staircase House" with Pamela Pearson
All meetings are at Furness Vale Social Club, Yeardsley Lane and admission for non members is £1 including refreshments.
Look out for further details or visit the website : furnesshistory.blogspot.com

Snoopy,
Having been called a thug last week, I changed my signature to reflect this, not realising that it affected ALL my posts, not just those added after the signature change. I've reset it now, and have posted this so your previous post will make sense.
Anyway thanks to Parabuild for sorting out the problem, I will try and get to at least one of the meetings.

Dad would go to the pub, The Station Inn with my elder brothers on a Friday night. The only time my Mum went out was to the Mother’s Union. A bit later in the early 50’s, I knew a spinster lady who married a divorced man and was asked by the vicar to leave the Mother’s Union.

When I was young, they blasted at the quarry, and then transported the stone on lorries. Marsland owned it, and then he sold it and went to live at Horwich End. Further towards Whaley Bridge, before the bungalows were built, was all fields. I remember a small private plane landing there. We just stood on the other side of the road and watched. When I was about 12 or 13, the bungalows were built. I remember matches being sold and there was supposed to be a lucky number inside. You could win a bungalow. It was a swindle but the three bungalows, built at angles are known as matchbox bungalows.

When I was about 12 years old I would go to the cinema with Mary and my friend Gladys Hadfield on a Saturday afternoon. We were given spends to go; a penny to go in and a penny for sweets if we went to Whaley Bridge. There were too many of us to have spends when any younger. At New Mills cinema on Union Road, we entered down a side passage. After paying, we were given a small bar of Cadbury’s chocolate; that’s why we went there. At Whaley Bridge, where the Co-op chemist is now, the cinema had a series of pictures to show, so we went every week to watch them. The Saturday show at Christmas, they gave everyone an apple or an orange. We would always walk there and back.

The matchbox bungalows are, I believe, some of the ones on Jodrell Meadow.

Thanks for this David, I'm new to the forum and fairly new to the area. Can't make it tonight but I'll be sure to attend in the future. I can't see one of these past events that doesn't look fascinating. Most of these events happening in Whaley appear to take place during the day when myself and my partner work.
