It’s surprising how quickly the street scene changes.
I’ll put a few photos on here that aren’t really that old but it just goes to show how businesses come and go; and some quicker than others.
It will be interesting to see what memories are brought back to some forum members; if any of them can remember back so long.
Anyway I’ll put a new photo on every day or so and see what response we get.

Blimey, only the Dolly tub has survived or has the Solicitor taken over the building?

Ashby the jeweller is, of course, now a dress shop. I was in there on Saturday selling raffle tickets and I remarked that the inner door still has an engraved glass panel with the old name on it. Remember buying wedding rings there. My intended tried on a very expensive ring which got stuck on her finger and needed. Thought I would have to sell my car to pay for it!

And the closure of Mr Hills shoe shop was a real tragedy. He could always find a pair of shoes to fit my awkward feet. But, at least the shop has been converted to good community use.

The Derbyshire Building Society is only a name now being based in Swindon as part of Nationwide.

A bit of a change here in very recent times.

Excuse me Mr Scope but I was very interested in your tale of the wedding ring when it sort of tailed off. Could you let us have the next episode ASAP?

Good afternoon R. S-S

Thank you for posting these photographs.

They bring back some very happy memories.

I am also very interested in davethescope's wedding ring tale and can't wait to find out what his wife needed in Ashby's Jewellers.

Come on Dave, don't leave us hanging. Were you able to give her what she needed and have you still got your car?

A knitting shop called EWE KNIT. Selling all you needed for knitting and sewing. Upstairs was a dentists (Mr. Hugie) and all his very noisy torture equipment. In the olden days you could even have gas for a filling whilst asleep.

I like that one G.Jackson "gas for a filling whilst asleep" !!    That's a new one on me. How long ago would that have been?

Hi Gnats,

In the 1950s. You could have gas for anything. Fillings or extractions. The drilling machine was enormous, the noisy electric motor was floor mounted and vibrated a lot. Then lots of belt driven wheels connected the power to the hand tools used by the dentist. It was very noisy and frightening. Then came the pain. The waiting room was at the front of the building over the shop that became Ewe Knit. The waiting room had Punch magazines there, this was the only good thing about going to the dentists The operating room was at the back of the building.

Well, RSS, I was left with the choice of selling my car to pay for the ring or chopping of my fiancée's finger to recover the ring. Whilst I was, very briefly, pondering this dilemma Mrs Ashby produced a bowl of warm water and some soft soap which served to release the ring.

EWE KNIT TOO to be precise. It is now the SEWING ROOM, a very useful shop who does alterations and repairs and makes curtains and covers. Just the sort of place you need when you wife can't sew because he is missing a finger.

I remember being taken to Ashby's by my aunt to choose a piece of jewelry - chose a necklace which I still have (although it is in disrepair - snapped in the middle and I really should get it repaired !) Can't remember what it cost, but hope she didn't "throw a wobbly" at my choice !!

G.Jackson:
I remember the "block and tackle" drilling machines at the dentist - I just don't remember the application of gas for a filling !! Was this just a "Whaley'ism" ? A swift application of a mallet to the back of the head would proably suffice in my neck of the woods !!!!

Oh well, the golden age of the NHS strikes again.

I always used to have gas when visiting my dentist and remember staggering with help from my mum after treatment. As I hadn't been for a while on one occasion I asked why I couldn't have gas this time as I usually did.

"Usually? You haven't been for 6 years!"

Even Google is a bit out of date as Trusted has now moved.

Thank you all for the memories of Mr Hougie's surgery. I was also one of his customers. I recall having gas for extractions, but, at least with me, he was reluctant to give any form of anaesthetic for fillings, not even an injection. The drill was a lot slower than the modern ones and to get rid of all the decay in the cavity he had to press it against the tooth with a circular motion. Then when the drill hit the nerve ... the thought of it still makes me shudder.

It's possible I may be doing Mr Hougie an injustice as I may be thinking of his predecessor, whose name I've forgotten.

Hi Snowy,

Yes Google does appear to be a bit out of date .

As regards the dentist; well I didn’t go there but past visits fill me with horror.

I remember the gas very well indeed or more to the point the gas mask. There were loads of old black and white films out in those days about the air force and bombing raids and the gas mask resembled a fighter pilots safety mask.
At school you would say: “I’ve been for a check-up and I need a filling.”
And someone would say: “Oh, are you going for fighter pilot practice then?”

I had, however, forgotten about the pulleys and cogs that they used to operate the drill.

I doubt if I’ll sleep tonight.

Good afternoon R.S-S

Around what year would this photo have been taken  - my Aunt and Uncle had the Greengrocer's which is in the picture - not sure whether they still owned it at this time.
