Hi All,

This was posted to me via the whaley web page. I thought it would be of interest. There may be a picture of the plaque in due course, but the catalogue isn't available yet at http://www.hallsestateagents.co.uk/fine-art/online-documents

Subject: WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT PLAQUE TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION

Message Body:
A copper plaque with links to the national movement to give women in the United Kingdom the right to vote is to be sold at a fine art auction in Shropshire next month.

The plaque, in the shape of a shield, was presented by Whaley Bridge Women’s Suffrage Society in Derbyshire to Mr A. H. Burgess of the Men’s League for Women’s Suffrage in 1911.

Valued at up to £250, it will go under the hammer in the applied arts section of Halls’ popular collective auction at the Welsh Bridge saleroom in Shrewsbury on February 27.

Women's suffrage was a national movement that began in 1872 with the formation of the National Society for Women's Suffrage and later the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS).

In 1905, a militant campaign began with the formation of a breakaway movement, the Women's Social and Political Union, known as the suffragettes, who staged a series of violent protests.

The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave the vote to women over the age of 30 who met minimum property qualifications and a further Act in 1928 extended the vote to all women over the age of 21.

For more information about the auction contact Halls on tel: 01743 284777.

For more information please contact Jeremy Lamond, Halls’ fine art director, on Tel: 01743 284777 or Duncan Foulkes, public relations adviser, on 01686 650818.

Cheers
Jon.
