Good morning.
The moderation of the History Forum hasn't had the desired effect of encouraging more members to post, so in an attempt to try and generate some enthusiasm I propose to set a quiz.
I think the last historical competition we had on this forum was the one set by R. S-S relating to Dr Allen's dog. That competition was won by Curious and knowing her powers of detection and knowledge of Whaley's past, she is probably favourite to win this one.
The rules are very straightforward – Name the year in Whaley Bridge's history.
The first set of clues are:
More than 5000 people live in Whaley Bridge.
Irene Smith is landlady of The Goyt Inn.
You can't get cod and chips at 135 Buxton Road but Steven's are happy to sell you a Daily Express.
A substantial prize for the winner will, no doubt, be offered by Chairman Jon The Whaley One and further clues to the year in question will follow in due course.
Good luck to all those who enter.

OK Horwich Ender, here's my first guess - 1981? If I'm wrong, more clues please.

Second go: 1971.
I had put Stevens in the papershop after Tom Goodfellow, but I guess it was the other way round. I've picked Census Years, not sure about Irene yet......

Good morning Curious and Jacko.
I don't propose to reveal the answer until all the clues have been provided but it has been noted you are the first members to say 1981, 1971 and 1974.
Please feel free to have as many attempts as you like but Chairman Jon The Whaley One may take into account any incorrect answers when he awards his prize for the winner.
Here are the second set of clues:
Johnson Machinery are building Humpers at their Bingswood Works.
The Youth Club is on Wharf Road.
You can't get sweet and sour pork at 16 Market Street but you can get your bunnions treated at the Chiropody Clinic.

The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct. |

Good evening.
Correct Answer = 1972
Winner = Snowy
Congratulations to Snowy on being the first forum member to correctly identify the mystery year as 1972.
No doubt, Chairman Jon The Whaley One will be in touch with Snowy to let him/her know what prize they have won.
