I have a piece of wood supposedly from one of the original bridges in Whaley Bridge. Can anyone shed any light on it.

Hi Les.
I'm afraid I've not the foggiest what it is, but it is beautiful. Would make a beautiful lid to a box if you're handy with the woodwork.
It looks to be in amazingly good condition if it was from a bridge, given the wear and tear it would have been exposed to in the open.
Hope someone can help you.

Hi,
When the old stone bridge on Bridge St was demolished, (after 1904), some timber was recovered from the foundations, and this was used to make a chair, which was used, and still is used, as the official chair for the Chair of Whaley Bridge Town Council. It can be seen in the Mechanics Institute. It's entirely possible that other objects were made at the time, though I havn't seen any records of this.
The information above comes from 'Whaley Bridge in old Picture Postcards', by Robert and Pamela Pierce on pg 42 which shows a picture of the old bridge.
Cheers

I believe it came from a well known Whaley family and family friend, Ralph Joule who lived at the Carr at Horwich End for many years. Is the chair available to view to the public, the said piece of wood can be returned to Whaley if wanted.
Many thanks for reply, what a great site

Hi Les,
Is there anything on the back of the carving, or any other provenance that you know of? Regarding the Chair, if you pop in any morning during the week (except Friday) then the Town Clerk would show you it.
Cheers

Their is a piece of card that had writing on it but its faded to the point you cant see it at all. The wood is in good condition as it has been stored away for years. A visit to the Mechanics is in order I think. Many thanks for your help and keep this forum going.
