Hi

An excellent idea. Saves having to trawl through all of the previous posts

Just a  suggestion to improve it... could one of the site admins  make the Photo library a "sticky" so it will always be at the top of the first page?

Hello all

Can someone refresh my memory on how to put the picture directly into the posting please? All I seem to be able to do is "attach" the photo.

I've tried "cut and paste" - it "cuts" but it don't "paste" !! Please help !!  (I am, believe it or not, supposed to be computer literate )

Hello Gnatalee,

You are computer literate, I am far from it. But with the help of Cllr JonG and by looking at an old post from a forum member who is no longer with us I have come up with a method that works:

First download a free programme called IrfanView. Then use your mouse to outline the photo you want to display, a message will come up saying ‘copy image’, click this and paste it onto the IrfanView clipboard. Then press ‘save as’ and give the photo a title.
This then goes straight into ‘my documents’.
I then use Flikr, again free, to find the new photo and you can transfer it from IrfanView to Flikr. Simply click on the photo and press ‘copy’ and then paste it on to the forum.

Jon knows a better and quicker way but this works for me.

The best of British.

As people will see I am having trouble attaching photos, also I have had help from webmaster and also Jon and written down the instructions which have worked in the past. Using the same  instructions now I cannot attach them, has any thing changed or am I just having a bad day?

George,

Your photo had actually been uploaded. The trouble was that it over on the far right, so when you scanned it, you mustn't have cropped off all the spare space to the left.

I haven't worked out how to upload photos bigger than 300x300 pixels direct to the message area, as when I do them bigger than that, they show as attachments. Clearly you have cracked that restriction as your photo was much larger than that when I downloaded it to crop away all the blank space.

ps. the photo of the new boiler being delivered to Botany was taken in June 1984. Not sure of the exact day, as the first boiler took 2 days to get into Botany's yard, then another couple of days to be winched into the boiler house. The second boiler came a week or so later, so I'm not sure if this was the 1st or the 2nd!

Hello Buggyite,

Try the method I have described above to Gnatalee.

It is a bit long winded I know but if it works for me anyone can do it.

And with a bit of practice you get a lot quicker.

This is a very good photo, George,

Do you know what the building was?

Was the Whaley Fire Engine stationed within the Iron Church/Buxton Road Tea Rooms at the time?

When the Fire Engine raced out of the Iron Church do you know if it set off all Fred Beard’s clocks?

I imagine Frankie would have the answers.

Dear R. S-S your mention  of Fred Beard reminded me of when we were clearing out my grandad's belongings after he died. We found a repair slip for a fob-watch from the said Mr. Beard. The slip was dated and over  25 years old  so for a laugh we took it into the famous clock repairer. He shuffled through various boxes and said he'd found it and it would be ready the following Thursday.

Evening all

Mr Jackson I was told Fred beard went on strike.

Thank you buggyite, I am going to try some more  photos I don't know if they are cropped but my dry eyes are irritating so will post them as they are.

R S-S The building on thr right was possibly a garage at one time but it was the indoor market as I remember it. I don't know about the larger building or the answers to the other questions as you say I expect Frankie can come up with more info. Probably you add to the others coming up Frankie. Meanwhile the next one also shows the end of the Co-op garage, now Bridge garage and the Goyt Mill chimney.

This one shows only the old garage still standing and the fire station under construction looking towards the backs of the shops on Market St.

Now the walls are going up and you can see the buildings where Goyt Place is built (I think they) were Williamsons Wheelwrights and undertakers. This was taken off the incline.

CReWdog asked for the topic to be "a sticky " so it always stayed at the top of the page.

If it is used a lot, which I presume it will be, it will always be at or near the top. The only

problem I can see is that the topic will be so large it will soon become almost un-usable.

There will have to be an index on the same lines as the New Mills Local History Site which

I informed the forum about a few weeks ago.I don't know how or who can do this but it

should be done before we all waste a lot of time and effort doing something that, as it

grows, becomes useless.
