Lady M.

I don't know much about the evacuees personally other than the fact that most came from  Leigh on Sea, Essex.  They arrived in June 1940. One reception centre was at Watford Mount, New Mills where they were accommodated on camp beds until allocated to local homes.  I shall see if any records are in  the History Society archives.

The following articles tell of peoples experience of the evacuations

Hi Lady M

I think you may have already seen this article, but I did promise about 12 months ago to post this Newspaper cutting on the Forum and don't think I got round to it.  This is the only information I've been able to find about the Evacuees ariving at Chinley Station in June 1940.  Hopefully there could be other Forum Members who may know more?

Hi Parabuild, & Mrs C, Thank-you for your help, I did print the article & question my mother she thinks she came in 1939 & not 1940, she says she came before christmas, however as June is before December I said it could have been 1940 to which she replied she was only 7 perhaps she was mixed up! Mrs C I have also printed off your bit which I have seen before, perhaps as we both know the mother in question we should try to investigate further, however where that would be I am not sure, she thinks a relative may know more than she has said. Do you want the sexy stockings? thats Mrs C not Parabuild!!
Thanks Lady M.

The BBC quote is naming my Grandparent's house which I grew up in. The school teacher was my teacher at the school mentioned in the article as well.

Two new booklets are now available from the History Society.  Both Mabel Townend and Edwin Bold have lived in Furness Vale all of their lives.  Many people will remember Edwin from the Paragon Garage at Newtown and Mabel from Furness Vale school. These booklets are their memories of life in the village.  An earlier booklet "Dolly Ford" by one of our elder residents is still available.  All are 22 pages, priced at £1.50 each or £2 inc postage.

I have heard Mr. Whittaker speak on Woodford and AV Roe, he is a very good speaker and I'm sure anyone going to the club will be impressed.

Our Christmas meeting is on Tuesday 6th December. The venue as usual is Furness Vale Social Club/Community Centre. This is a social evening and we are inviting members and visitors to bring along something of interest or to give a short talk.  We hope to offer a seasonal fare of cheese and wine and a mince pie.
