Furness Vale Station. There are several similar photos around and this is the best that I have yet seen.

Shallcross,
RSS
I believe Alan Dranfields Grandfather is one of those pictured.
Given the age of the photograph, but not knowing Alan Dranfield's age, I would have expected it to have been one of his great-grandfathers instead of a grandfather. |

Hello Buggyite,
The Dransfield family lived at 188 Buxton Road, WB.
According to the electoral register of 1949 there were 4 people in the house of voting age:
Herbert (Yebbie)
Ada
Hilda
May
In the register of 1950 only Herbert and Ada were on the list. The 2 girls had left.
It was the same in 1951.
In 1956 Alan’s name was added so he must have been at least 21 at that time.
I can remember 2 younger brothers Ernest and the late young Herbert.
If Alan was at least 21 in 1956 let’s take the middle figure and say he was 23 that would mean that he was born in about 1933.
If we guess that Yebbie started his family when he was 24 and by 1948 he had a daughter old enough to vote that would mean Yebbie was born around the turn of the century (1903). I think he worked at the Waterloo Pit.
If Yebbie’s father produced him when he was 24 then Alan’s grandfather would have been born in about 1872.
So if the photo is around 1892 then Alan’s grandfather would have been a worker aged about 20. His great grandfather could have been in his forties.
There is someone on the photo who could be 20 and a few who could be in their 40’s.
All guesswork so it’s over to you Shallcross.

I think Yebbie must have been born before 1903-ish if he worked at the Waterloo Pit, as I think you said it closed in 1915.
It does rather look as though Alan was one of Yebbie's younger children (something I'd not really allowed for in my original "sums") so it looks like Shallcross is right. |

Sorry, Shallcross,
James and Helen were at number 184 in 1950 and then the house was occupied by your grandparents Clifford and Jessie in 1951 according to the register.
Geoffrey is first shown in the 1962 register.

Hi ,
Many thanks (and sincere apologies for my delay in posting) to Mr Anonymouse who has sent me this picture of 'Shallcross Sidings looking South from Chapel Road' . I must confess that I cannot get my head around this picture and how it fits in with the view you get today if I were to stand on Chapel Road over the bridge and look South in the direction of Cromford Court . Am I standing in the wrong place, or is this possibly a view of the overgrown Shallcross Incline?(at the centre of the picture beyond the last wagon , rising vertically upwards over the incline?)I have a vague memory of having seen a similar view before but I'm sure someone will make this all very clear.
Cheers

Re Jon's Post #133:
This photo is also on page 12 of the Foxline book ‘Scenes from the Past : 37 (Part One) Railways of the High Peak – Whaley Bridge to Friden’ by N Jones & J M Bentley.
The description with it says: Whaley Bridge (Shallcross) LNWR: Whaley Bridge Goods was closed from 30 Jan 1965 but remained a “part unstaffed station/halt” until 2 August 1971. This view from the A625 road bridge depicts a busy scene with high-sided coke wagons for the gas works (right) whilst the ascending line of trees beyond the standing vehicles denote the route of the abandoned Shallcross Incline. It was this point that No. 46152 was seen on page 11 – E M Johnson” (this photo has already been posted on the Forum showing the steam engine coming through the tunnel).
There’s also a photo taken from the same place on 10 March 1956 which is on page 123 of the Foxline book ‘Scenes from the Past : 50 (The Buxton Line – Part one). Stockport, Davenport and Hazel Grove to Disley, New Mills (Newstown) and Whaley Bridge’ by Gregory K Fox. This shows that the trees on the left of the first photo have been cut down and there is also one less track going off round to the right.
The description with this one says: An elevated view of Shallcross yard from Chapel Road Bridge in the direction of Fernilee. The single line from Whaley Bridge ‘fanned’ out into four sidings, three serving the goods shed and that to the right providing standage for wagons to and from the Gas Works, the buildings of which are to the right of the picture. The long abandoned Shallcross Incline continued beyond the goods yard. This view taken on 10th March 1956 shows the intact alignment of the incline beneath undergrowth before piecemeal building across the trackbed. The surviving gas works buildings were subsequently taken over by Dorothea Restorations Ltd.
Hope this helps
