The picture shows a "Crab" 2-6-0 mixed traffic tender engine, designed by George Hughes, chief mechanical engineer of the LMS, and built at Horwich works (or Crewe for the later ones).
The temporary headboard on the smokebox door shows that it's pulling an excursion train. In 1957 it could have been going from Manchester to somewhere like Matlock,
Main identifying feature is the footplate profile, raised over the cylinders.
In BR days they were numbered approx 42800 - 42950.
I can remember no 42886 was allocated to Buxton shed and was often seen on the Whaley line.
Sorry, this is real anorak stuff, but it interests me at least ...Edited by user 29 October 2013 14:23:05(UTC)

On second thoughts, it could be an excursion on its way back from a day trip to Blackpool or the North Wales coast.

Good afternoon Snowy
There is no need to apologise as there are many other forum members who share your passion and interest for the railways of yesteryear.
Just wait for buggyite's comment. He will probably be able to tell us the name of the engine driver and what he had for his breakfast.
buggyite has made some brilliant contributions to this forum and proof can be seen just by looking back at his postings on this thread.
I am confident buggyite and other forum members will agree that your comments are informative and most welcome.

Hi,
Anonymouse has been in touch again and has supplied several pictures including several of Pat Phoenix at work behind the bar in the Navi at Buxworth (see thread 'historical photographs of Whaley pubs' ). This one is of Buxworth Station in 1953.
