How about the Whittaker brothers. Showjumpers. Had a horse, I recall, called New Mill.

The Whittakers lived in Kettleshulme in the early 1980s.  My claim to fame is that I once drove one of them to a farm in Pennistone in Yorkshire while I was driving taxis for Robbing Rick - whatever happened to him?

Rex Harrison also came to Whaley his wife Rachel Roberts was the sister of Mrs Timms who used to teach at Whaley School, also Mrs C should remember Charlie Drake planting a tree at Whaley school! Betty Driver was the Landlady at the Cock Hotel and sent me a very nice signed photo when I sent her a cutting from the Buxton Advertiser some years ago. The lead singer of the Hollies once went acroos the Zebra crossing before it became a Pelican! I believe he used to live in Disley. There must be more but my little grey cells have stopped working!! I think Robbing Rick went to Buxton.

Yes I do remember Charlie Drake planting his tree at Whaley School for Plant-a-Tree in '73 - I don't think it's still there though?  I remember Rex Harrison too.

Nobody's mentioned our most famous visitor - Princess Diana.

Don't know if Chapel counts here, but I went to school with Lloyd Cole of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - he lived in Chapel and went to New Mills Grammar.  He came to our school reunion at the Crown and Mitre some years ago.

I did not know that Shirley Bassie stayed at the Hall.

Are you correct with your spelling of the owner?

Was it Captain Howard or Captain Howarth.

Can you remember his night club in Manchester? Not that I am suggesting for one moment that you are an expert in Manchester night clubs, you understand.

I met Steve Mcdonald from "Corrie" a few years ago in The Shepherds having a few pints of Marstons, when Noreen was the landlady. But, then again I think Noreen is more famous than he is!!!!

Welcome to the forum Pubcrawler. A great first post. Has anyone else noticed Steve McDonald in Corra and Manchester United Star Dimitar Berbatov never appear on the TV at the same time, are they one and the same?

Drummer drum from Alvin Stardusts band lived on Old road, also appeared as an extra in Corontation street from time to time. Ian Lavenders auntie lived on Chapel road and he was a frequent visitor generally at Christmas. Seem to remember Princes Anne visiting Whaley School in the 70's

What about Dave Buckle, he lives on Old Road and has been on Coronation Street thousands of times as an extra in the Rovers. I think he only had one speaking part when he threatened Jim McDonald. Very brave Dave!!!!

Here we go again,

Dave Buckle did not threaten Jim McDonald; he never had anything to do with Jim McDonald.

His only line in the Rovers was: “Pint please, Fred”.

By the way Mr Jackson in 1840 Florence Nightingale’s dad bought Pyegreave Cottage in Combs and legend has it that young Florrie went on horseback many times to Whaley Bridge.

Legend only I would stress but I think that trumps your Dave Buckle and his trick cycle.

One of the most famous names in history is also alleged to have paid visits to a lady in Tunstead Milton.

Dear R. S-S, you are obviously not an avid Coronation Street fan. When Liz and Jim were divorcing Mr. Buckle made his play for the beautiful Liz and Jim didn't like it and there was a confrontation at the bar. I cannot remember Dave's words but I'm sure he does. Perhaps Rockbanker could just pop down to Dave's and ask him to settle this arguement.

This topic is getting off the point by the way. Someone famous's father buying a cottage in Combs. What next? Probably someone with a spotty face coming near to Whaley, Huh. another fairy tale from R. S-S.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Mr R S-S,

"Have you any news for us on your very own Mass Murderer?"

I presume you are referring to Bargee John Cotton, who murdered his wife in 1898 at Bugsworth Basin, after drinking in the Rose & Crown.

By Harold Shipman standards, this hardly qualifies for "Mass Murderer" status, I wouldn't have thought.

As for have I any news.... well, I'm sure he is still dead.

There is an excellent write-up of the whole gruesome business on David Kitchen's brocross website, written by Peter Whitehead, so rather than repeating it here, I will merely post the url:

A good evening to you, Buggyite,

As Bugsworth has little or no claim to fame it has desperately tried to cling on to the myth that John Cotton was the last person to be executed at Derby Jail.

It is even on the Bugsworth web site.

But they have conveniently missed a few after JC; they have also sadly overlooked the fact that he was a mass murderer.

For your delight here are the last 8 executions and the condemned’s crimes at Derby:

1888. Arthur Thomas Delaney, for the murder of his wife at Chesterfield.

1889. George Horton, for murdering his 8 year old daughter to gain £7 insurance money.

1896. William Pugh, for rape.

1898. John Cotton, for the murder of his 3rd wife. In the condemned cell he admitted to murdering the other 2 as well.

1902. John Bedford, for the murder of Nancy Price at Duckmanton.

1905. John Silk, for the murder of his mother at Chesterfield.

1906. Walter Marsh, for the murder of his wife.

1907. William Slack, for the murder of Lucy Wilson. Last execution at Derby.

It would seem that wife murder was quite a popular pastime in those days.

Professor Philip Dawson will be happy to know he has won the Nobel Prize for physics but the two guys who really did win it( Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov) won't want to share the cash and fame with him.
