The new chippy has opened in Furness and seems to be doing well. The rumour mongers have already started sniping because they are worried about losing trade. The tale going around The Sheperds is that they are using frozen chips. They most certainly are not!  Apparently a shop not too far away started the rumour, presumably because they are worried. If they are producing good quality food they needn't worry had they?

I know which counter my shilling will be going over.

I was served frozen chips from a chippy once!  It was down south not round here.

I think the chippy to beat is the "Crispy Cod" in New Mills....everything is top notch every time!

And your verdict on the new chippy is...?

Chips, curry, gravy, batter, fish?

Are you as much an afficionado as you profess?

Harry,

I was talking about "Crispy Cod" in New Mills, I haven't been to the New chippy. I am also interested to know what people think?

Your mission, should you choose to accept, is to visit the new chippy. The mission may be dangerous, it will contain gravy and peas. You may even get battered.

This PC will self destruct in 10 seconds.

Where am I likely to find him, does he live in Whaley or just socialise here? Is he real or part of someone else?

If so would that make him a fragment of your imagination?

Hi

The best fish and chips are to be found in Bollington-at the restaurant that used to be the Meridian (in my humble opinion).  The Fryery used to be good , but the batter is too thickly applied by the present fryer.   The chips on canal street are quite simply inedible and only suitable for bank holiday tourists.

My companion enjoyed her haddock, chips and home made tartar sauce at the old hall, Whitehough, only a pleasant evenings stroll away.

But taste is a matter of opinion,  some people drink Robinsons beer !

Cheers

Hi

At lunch time, purely in the interests of research for the forum I did a U turn at the Furness Chinese and visited the new chippy.

On display were some interesting looking pies and the usual manky "sausage" in two sizes that has visitors from our Polish twin town rolling around in laughter.

I ordered fish and small chips which were freshly cooked to order. The chips were most certainly not frozen and I saw the fish battered.

During my five minute wait a gentleman requested a steak pudding-none available.  Mushy peas-none available. "Two steak pies then"-only one available-it was all getting a bit pythonesque / fawlty towersesque

My fish and chips was presented to me with very little salt (OK, thats healthy) - luckily I carry an emergency airline type sachet.  On opening the recyclable fibre box (none of your dolphin choking polystyrene here) before my eyes was what looked like a retouched photo of the perfect fish and chips- the chips were golden like they had  food colouring added and the fish had a bubbly dark and crispy looking batter.

I made haste to the canal basin to dine. The chips were perfectly cooked, tasty -probably Maris Pipers and fairly dry.  The colour was from perfect temperature control. I couldn't see the fryer, but noticed that they were cooked in a basket-not the usual huge swimming pool of oil type system.

The fish was a revelation.  The batter was light, crispy, bubbly and crunchy and although slightly oily tasted of clean oil-and not of Buxton carnival smelly doughnut origin.  The fish was fresh smelling and tasty, meaty and firm I took it to be the more sustainable haddock.  Some ten minutes later I showed the remains of my meal to some colleagues and the batter remained crispy-the oil stains on the container minimal.

The proprietors explanation for the lack of puddings, pies and peas was that she had to throw the previous days unsold away.  She is clearly running an ethical business and knows how to fry and source quality produce.  The steak puddings apparantly are to be recommended.  The ammount of ready cooked "sausages" on display, perhaps reflects aniticipated sales from the local work force, however this establishment ranks amongst the best in the country and deserves our support.  The two chippy's in Whaley should take note.  I would highly recommend a visit and I wish her well.

 Score:

Fish 10

Batter 9- slightly oily

Chips 9- only double fried could get a 10

Service 10- "don't mess with the chef" aprons suggest confidence without arrogance.

Ethical Policy 9-homemade lemonade /elderflower cordial instead of cans (OK just joking)

Diet coke  0 ( corporate American Rubbish-why did I buy it!)

Cost 4.70 GBP without wine

Cheers

I myself had cause to visit the shop yesterday only to find that the fryer, Pauline, was not at all happy. She said that the finished products weren't up to the standard that she demanded and was rectifying the problem once she had closed. If you gave such good marks when you visited on the same day, God help other shops when Pauline further improves the quality. A sound business which is obviously proud of high standards, standards which have been gained from visiting other shops to see what they offer and then taking and acting upon good advice.

If you are a competitor be afraid, be very afraid!

Hi all,

I have been reading all of your reviews and i thought that i would visit the chippy for myself. To start off there is one thing i have to say, the chips are definatly not frozen.

On my visit i had to wait around five minutes to be served which i thought was fair enough because the shop was very busy. When i was served, i thought that the staff were very friendly. As i ordered my fish and chips, i was told straight away that it would be five minute for the fish as they were cooked to order. I was very pleased to find that there were childrens meals avalible, as i have two children who would not eat full portions.

When i got my food, i took it home and when i opened it, it looked amazing. All of the food was eaten with no left overs. All that i can say is that i will deffinatly be revisiting.

For a new chip shop they are doing incrediably well, and i wish them all the best!

The best fish and chips in the world can be obtained in Whitby, unfortunately by the time you get home to Whaley or Chapel they tend to be cold

Firstly, a poor attempt at humour, might I suggest you stick to the day job!

Secondly, I am always puzzled when someone uses that phrase ' the best **** in the world' unless you have sampled/experienced every **** in the world then that is surely a misrepresentation. How could you possibly know?

Surely it should be 'The best fish and chips I have ever had were in Whitby'

I would also argue that you are wrong in your statement, everyone says the best fish and chips are at the seaside, the occasion usually clouds judgement. There are lots of tourists at the seaside and are only there for one day. Therefore the owner doesn't have to try too hard to get a decent turnover, similarly in city centres the same applies. Small shops in local areas have to rely on local trade, therefore the product has to be consistently high.

Incidentally, there appears to be no more mention of the local expert from the bowls club. Does he actually exist and if so I throw down the gauntlet to challenge his expertise.
