I understand that Miss Bailey was the last telephonist at Whaley Bridge. She lived at Vale Cottage in Furness Vale where her leaving certificate was found.

Dear Parabuild,

When Whaley Bridge manual telephone exchange closed down ( it was above the old Post Office), I think it was in 1964,all the operators could have been classed as the "Last Operator" in Whaley Bridge. Some lost their jobs but most were employed in other manual exchanges in the area.

Thanks Mr J. In those days we could dial "O" and Miss Bailey or one of her colleagues would have answered. I believe she retired when the exchange closed. She had worked for them for 42 years.. Excuse my ignorance but where was the old Post Office by the way?

The Old Post office was on Market Street first on the left as you cross the Bridge, The Old Old Post Office was around the corner on Wharf Road left hand side beyond the Bank.

Thanks Shallcross. I can see that the post box is still set into the wall.

I am told that two of the other telephonists were Ruth Jackson and Maud West.
