Regarding your question.

It is most probable that the rifle range, and others in the district, were used for military training, and pleasure.

The British suffered terribly in the Boer war, and were, quite frankly, hopeless shots. The Boers, however, were much better marksmen.

As a result of the losses in the Boer war the British Government realised that in the event of war we need trained marksmen, and set up rifle ranges up and down the country so people could shoot as a hobby, and at the same time, become proficient shots should the need arise to defend the Realm.

History tells us that this became necessary in 1914, and the previous practice on the ranges may well have contributed to our defeat of the German army.

I would not worry about any cricketers being shot. This range is no longer used. If it was being used there would be lookouts, warning flags and signs to warn the public of the danger.

I have a copy of the 1899 , second edition , O.S. Map for Whaley Bridge that shows the Rifle Range , Target , 100 , 200 & 300 yds. positions .
Sorry that I unable to scan due to the design of my scanner but can take any photos of sections required .
Also I am trying to attach photos of the Horwich End Range and the Whaley Moor Range.

any old maps of the rosey bank area would be great!...pre and post 1869....when the house was bulit...Im still after a photo of the house , I have a copy from about 1900 ish ....still after the original tho!

somone once told me that jane lane actually continued down to the basin originally , but yes always intrested in anything in the vicinity!

For old maps of Bugsworth ( and the whole country) use www.old-maps.co.uk.

Select Get Maps then find your location.

There are 1:2500 and 1:10000 for  various dates from around 1880. Plus some 1:500 town plans.

But allow plenty of time because it's addictive!

The Chapel rifle range dated back to napoleonic times.

Hi Moogie
A couple of tips for you ( and anyone else!) in case you haven't already discovered

As well as your browser, open a drawing program like Paint

Once you have found your map, click"Enhanced Zoom"
Then select the bottom right icon to give full screen, and click the box to activate mouse

Then "Print Screen". ctrl-c, escape
Select the next edition of map
switch to Paint
ctrl-v
file save-as ( use .jpg not bmp)

switch back to internet and your next map should be ready for enhanced zoom etc

this gives maps for consecutive editions with same centre and same scale, so you can trace developments.( or contraction if, like me, you are interested in railways!)

I have not tried printing transparancies for overlaying, but I'm sure it would work

Other map locations worth exploring are the Furness brickworks tramway, and Middlewood, and the 1:500 of Buxton

It is frustrating that some places were never re-mapped between 1900 and 1960

Other sources are
the Godfrey edition 1899 reprint ocovering Whaley and western half Bugsworth
A cd of the whole 1899 edition for Derbyshire
