Copied this from another forum :-
Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, As an act of remembrance for all those who died and served, a campaign has been started to plant red poppy seeds in as many places as possible. Roadsides, fields, gardens, windowboxes etc. If we all scattered a packet of red poppy seeds in and around where we live there would be a huge display of red poppies this time next year to coincide with 28th July, the start of hostilities in Europe.
Red poppy seeds are readily available. So lets remember them. Please scatter some seeds.

My mother lost her Dad in 1917 in that war, she was born in 1914. Please buy your seeds from the above website.

Nice idea \Norman. We will be planting and hoping that it doesn't offend anybody in the village |

Hi Dave
Can I say that if it offends anyone that they should consider leaving this country because of the millions that lost their lives a century ago.
I realise it is personal to me but I am sure many were affected by it. Edited by user 06 July 2013 22:03:50(UTC)

If offended get on the Abu Qatada Jordan Express. Poppy will always be the symbol of rememberance.

Whilst the Great War had little effect on my family I am still a great supporter of Remembrance because WWII and, to a lesser extent, Korea was a major influence on my youth.
But, sadly, there are people who feel that the whole poppy thing is a glorification of war and would prefer it did not happen. Though the recent military adventures in the Middle East and Afghanistan seem to made a lot of people realise that it is not inconsistent to abhor the war whilst still admiring the combatants.
When do you plant the seed to get a display next July? |

Yes Dave, I support the troops not the politicians.
Have a look at the website in the first post, they give details about planting. Not a very clear website but all the info is there.

I'm torn by this- having visited the Somme recently and seen family war graves, I think remembering in some way is crucial. And the poppy is so iconic. But it is also a virulent weed that is supposedly poisonous to grazing cattle. Is the best way to remember those who gave their lives for us by unleashing a non-native weed into the environment? On balance I'll be planting something and having a quiet moment of celebration of the peace that the few afforded us many, but weeds won't be playing a part my remembrance- what you do is of course, up to you.

The word weed: commonly applied to unwanted plants in human-controlled settings. So a deliberately planted seed cannot be a weed. As for grazing cattle: non of those on my land. There are already a lot of poppies in the British countryside and very attractive they look. |
