memories of Whaley Bridge in the 1930s by Geoff Morten

Geoff Morten, 91 years old and still farming on the Bings, grew up in Whaley between the wars and remembers every moment. “All the sights and sounds, all the families and businesses that made up the place – I wanted to get them down on paper so they wouldn’t be lost to those coming after.” The result – a booklet of anecdotes centred around Market Street – brings 1930s Whaley Bridge back to life. You meet Grandad John Morten the butcher, Leonard Plant the cabinet-maker, Clogger Judd, Tommy and Dinah Coward, and a host of other characters who were all part of a thriving community.

Geoff’s book is available from Blythe House Hospice shop, the Village Barber and Wild’s butchers. It costs £2.50, and all profits are being donated to Blythe House Hospice.

As for the elephants – read the book and find out.

The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct.

Selling well. The first print run of 200 has almost sold out so another 250 have been printed. And a sequel is under consideration.

A second volume in preparation.   And hope to issue an e-Book soon.

Mrs Scope deserves far more credit for this venture than she is prepared to claim
