My understanding is that the Roosdyche was investigated by a team from Manchester University in the early 60's, and the conclusion drawn was that it was a glacial feature.

Does anyone know if a copy of their report is available (either on-line or in any of the local libraries)?

Thanks Jon, but I could not find a link to the 1960's report there, only some speculative stuff from later that I believe was never followed up.

Cheers

I always understood that the cricket club built the earthwork to mark the boundary and then removed a bit for parking spaces :)

Jon beat me to that link, but here's a book by the Geologist- in fact it might well be THE book.

Johnson, R. H. 1985 The Geomorphology of north-west England / edited by R.H. Johnson Manchester University Press, Manchester, U.K

Cheers

Hello RB,

Yes it’s me again. I’ll not take up much of your time this evening.

I remember when all the fuss was going on about the cricket club digging a bit of it out that some chap sent a really long letter to the Editor of the Buxton Advertiser.
I know the editor and phoned him up to ask him if he thought it was genuine and he said he really did not know but he printed it all the same.
They have an archive section and I am sure they would be only too happy to dig it out for you. It was in the section ‘Letters to the Editor’.

So this must be your famous "Whaley Wall Of Death" R.S-S.  Chariots rather than motor bikes. Another mystery solved.

Whilst googling around the subject, I came across this site that I had not stumbled over before. Some interesting stuff here

An useful find Rock Banker. The book "Chapel en le Frith, It's People and it's History" which is is MS Word for looks particularly interesting. Plenty of references to Whaley and adjoining areas.
