Hi all!

Does anyone know how Whaley Bridge used to be divided up? I've been looking into my paternal Grandfather's family and have found a father and son listed as innkeepers at Fernilee and Horwich End - would this be the same place, and where in modern Whaley does it cover?

I've also discovered a Great-Grandfather registered on the 1911 Census in Macclesfield, but on closer inspection, the details had him at 1 Bridge Street in Yeardsley Cum Whaley - would this be our Bridge St where the Goyt is? And why would it come under Macclesfield.

I would be really grateful if anyone could shed any light on all this, or give any clues about which pub I may have roots in - the family name is Rhodes.

Hello

Try http://www.disley.net/ for local family history stuff - census transcriptions, parish records etc. Good luck.

Hi I am also a Rhodes and from what i can remember one of our family was landlord of the Cock  inn at some point. The rhode's were also miners at the wharf pit and Joshua ran a soda water business in what is now Drinkwaters builder merchants.

Thanks for that! My family goes up through my Great Grandad Abel, then David, then Thomas. All were miners at some point and Thomas and David were listed as innkeepers on the 1871 and 1881 census, respectively. I think Joshua was the brother of David.

As a Coronation Street fan, I would be very excited if my ancestors ran the same pub as Betty Driver!
