I'm not sure of the date that this photograph was taken outside the Mechanics Institute, but it seems that it is a Rose Queen and Carnival celebration - does anyone know anything about more about it, or can they spot anyone they know?

That looks more like a "Whit walk" but I stand to be corrected

A very good afternoon to you dear Mrs Curious,

I have a photo taken at the same time; maybe with another camera or perhaps the initial cameraman moved over a little bit.

Whatever, this one shows the window in the Mechanics and one little girl is looking out and appears most disappointed that she is not taking part in the photo shoot.
Possibly she has been a little noisy or something and has been sent to the naughty step.
It couldn’t possibly be you could it Mrs Curious?
I would be really upset if it was your good self.

It's obviously the Rose Queen because the little girl at the front next to bugle boy has a cushion with the new crown on it.Why did they remove the poster from the window before the last cameraman did his bit though? The notice  could be a protest by the little girl's family saying  "Don't forget our little Glenda"

Hi,

If you look closely at  your original photos, is it possible to make out any of the other text on the poster at the back. Does it have the date ?

Cheers

I’ve had a look at my photo with a magnifying glass and the poster says:

A Children’s Carnival Rose Queen, Saturday June 30th, Children assemble at the Institute at 2.00pm prompt

30th June was on a Saturday in 1900, 1906, 1917, 1923, 1928, 1934 &1945.  I guess it's no later than that.

The lady with a hat on blocks out some of the wording, but that narrows the year down a bit.

Hi Mrs Curious,

Thank you for that -- the detective work definately starts to narrow it down. The Rose queen committee seem to think the Rose queen and Childrens Carnival started around 1920, but i'm not sure that they know that for sure. All we need are a couple more clues solving to arrive at a more exact date.

Interestingly there's a picture down at the mechanics this morning showing a childrens carnival. There are children in a float and there is a date on the side. I think it says 1917, but its difficult to tell. I need to look at it in a bit more detail, and ideally have a look at the original.

I dont suppose the signs in the windows provide any more clues do they. If they advertize any council events it's possible that old council minutes might help to provide a date.

Cheers

We've tried, by various means, to enlarge the signs in the windows but we can’t make out what they say.

But while we were doing this we recognised the girl on the front row second from the left as Nellie Kirk who was our Aunt Nell - so that explains why we have got a copy of the photo in the family.

Nellie was born in 1916 and going by the years that we’ve narrowed this event down to we assume Nellie looks more like 7 years old than 12 and that would then mean that this photo was taken in 1923.

How’s that?
