Here is a photo of a smithy which I believe was at the corner of Bridge Street/Market Street. (This is one of the photos loaned to me by my Dad's cousin who we visited last week.) He described some sort of "hollowed-out" something or other, near to the smithy, which they used to sit on and I did wonder if this was the missing Water Fountain !!
Anyway, I though it a very interesting photo, particularly since there are people in it, and thought perhaps today's locals might like to compare this picture with the Whaley of today. I think it is around about where the picture house used to be, where I sat with my grandmother watching Jerry Lewis in the "Bell-hop" movie - put me off going to the pictures for a long time because, to be honest, it was rubbish !!

Good evening Gnats,
That is yet again a good photo; I think I have it somewhere.
To see a larger version see my photo posted kindly by Cllr JonG on the thread started “The Old Drinking Fountain on Bridge Street/ Market Street on behalf of R. S-S.
It is on the second page on the history side of the forum.

Another wonderful photo from Gnatalee! However, to my shame, I just cannot place the building into present day Whaley. Is it where the bicycle shop is now, or am I a long way out? Help please R.S-S!
P.S. Remember now - no funny quips, or slapped hands are in order!

Good afternoon to you Fedup,
Now I am going to turn you into the photographer. You are standing on the Station Approach/Jodrell Car Park call it what you want and the railings to stop you falling over have just got into the bottom of your photo. You had hoped they wouldn’t because now some people will confuse the railings with the ones that stop you falling over the main road and into Canal Street.
They are a bit further to the left of your photo. But who’s bothered. When that photo was taken nobody would have thought it would appear decades later on a Whaley Bridge Forum on the Internet. But appear it has and many more like it will soon be doing so I hope.
The ‘Forge’ is now the flower shop and pet shop just to the right is the building that became our Cinema and today is the Pharmacy.
Strangely if you have another look at the picture, you may have to magnify it a couple of times, you will see my initials RSS emblazoned on the wall in first class metalwork.
That is all I am prepared to say on that subject.

Thank you R.
Thank you R.S-S. I now know exactly where you mean. As you have probably realised, I have a terrible problem with my non-existent sense of direction!!
As for your initials, yes, I have looked at them and am intrigued. Are you sure you won't reveal more?

Hi Harry
Very good harry, I like your witty reply. However it still leaves the question why R S-S like on the Smithy building? Is it due in part to all those baths?
