John Warren's diary records that on 13th May 1851 William Southren, son of John and Elizabeth Southren of Furness Vale Toll Bar fell from the "battlement" of the bridge on to the rock alongside the River Goyt.  The fate of the boy was not recorded.  This presumably refers to the toll bar at Joule Bridge at the bottom of Station Road.

On 11th July 1881, the Manchester Guardian reported that a 12 year old girl, the daughter of Mr W.Southern of Horwich End was playing on a high wall and fell 10 or 12 feet to her death.

Although 30 years apart the stories and names are so alike that a pure coincidence seems unlikely.  Can anybody clear up this mystery ?

Yes very sad incidents indeed, David,

But Southern was a very common name around here so possibly not related; otherwise surely the newspaper report would have mentioned it.

It was also not uncommon to fall over walls as can be seen from the following although I do note the proximity of The Jodrell Arms:

North Derbyshire & North Cheshire Advertiser

14 April 1882

serious accident

A man who appeared to be a stranger, walked in the dark over a wall in front of the Jodrell Arms on Monday evening.    He injured his face very badly.    The Local Board may find themselves in for damages for leaving this place unprotected.

Another wall incident concerned the construction of the railway from Dukinfield to Whaley Bridge ( It was started but later abandoned ).  One of the construction workers was taking a rest on a bridge parapet.  He lost his balance and fell to the ground pulling a coping stone from the wall.  The stone fell on to his head and killed him.
