  Whaley Bridge Forum Rules   v2.2      04 July 2013
Please abide by the following rules if you intend to post in the forums. These rules may be updated on an ongoing basis to deal with situations as they arise. Any changes will be flagged by a post to the forum indicating the new version.
We would prefer no rules, but the actions of a few require that we address the issue.
In using the forum, you fully accept and agree to all the rules below. If you do not accept all the rules, then you must not use the forum.
“Please be considerate and polite in your use of this forum.”
  • Your Legal Responsibility:
Please note that you are personally liable for anything you choose to post publicly on the forum. Think before you post. Defamation, slander and other offences are serious, and can cost you your job, your home and your liberty. Think BEFORE you post.

Even after posts are removed from public view, directly by moderators, or in response to a complaint, moderators or other individuals may make affected parties aware of the posts and the poster, in order that legal redress may be made. Moderated posts are not always deleted, are kept in a separate area, and will be made available for legal purposes if necessary.

  • Forum Disclaimer
All views and opinions expressed on this forum are those of the authors, and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, Whaley Bridge Town Council (the forum facilitators), Trusted IT (the hosts for our server) or the moderators.
  • Moderators
Moderators may move, delete or edit any posts without warning, which they feel break the forum rules or which they feel are deliberately testing the forums patience or the moderators patience. Moderators may also move or delete or edit posts which they feel are deliberately provocative, which they feel may be libellous or which they feel may cause distress to another user.  Moderators may warn, suspend or ban users without prior notice. Moderators are not liable in any way for failing or omitting to remove a post. Moderators are not required to give any reasons or enter into any discussion about their reasons for removing posts. The moderators decision is final. Posts questioning the moderators decisions will not be tolerated and will be deleted. Your posting history will be taken into account in any decision by the moderators.
Moderators, as unpaid volunteers, make their decisions based on the rules of the forum, and in the best interests of the forum. In using the forum, you agree not to hold the moderators responsible or liable in any way for any decisions which may subsequently, or on appeal , be reversed or relaxed.
  • User contact.
Users may be contacted directly by the forum operators or moderators at any time, for any reason, using the contact details as submitted when joining the forum. If you wish to ask questions of the moderators or raise a complaint you must provide your home contact details including full address and telephone number. Moderators, or any other person involved with the forum are not obliged to make any response to anonymous emails. Failure to provide contact details on request may result in banning from the forum.
  • Account Deletion.
User Accounts may be deleted at any time in accordance with the rules in this document. Additional house keeping activities may also result in account deletion. Occasional forum-wide email messages may be sent to all users. If email addresses are found to be invalid or there is no response, your account will be terminated. It is your responsibility to keep contact details up to date. The moderators or forum operators will not be held responsible for any issues resulting from accidental account deletion.

  • Users Anonymity:
Some users may choose to remain anonymous on the forum. Their right to anonymity on should be strictly respected.  Attempts by forum users to reveal peoples identity by any means will result in immediate suspension or removal from the forum.
  • Your details:
Your log-in details will not be released to any other parties other than those involved in the day to day running of the forum.  In the event of a solicitors letter or legal investigation regarding any posts you may have made, or been involved with, your  log-in details along with any others known, will be made available to the investigating party, and you may be contacted by them.
  • Users and User names :
Users must only have one username on the forum. Users should not create user names which are similar or could be mistaken for existing ones. User names must be at least 4 characters long.  Abuse of these rules will result in immediate deletion of the users account.
  • Stay ON Topic :
We require all posts to be positive, constructive, and on topic. We may delete individual posts that could ruin a good topic thread without warning or discussion.
  • Disruption:
We will remove any topics we deem inappropriate or disruptive. Please note that, from time to time, topics may be removed for being inappropriate even though your individual post in that topic may have been perfectly fine. Please do not feel this reflects badly on you.
  • Fun:
Having fun is great. Long may it continue, but please keep it positive and polite. We will take action against posts and/or topics that could cause unrest in the community beyond a civil and polite disagreement.
  • Trolling and Flaming
    Trolling and Flaming are not allowed. Any material or posts which are considered to constitute defamation, harassment, or abuse, or which are posted with the intention of starting a dispute, are strictly prohibited, and the poster will be deleted. Use common sense while posting.
  • Offensive Content:
    Material that is sexually or otherwise obscene, racist, or otherwise overly discriminatory is not permitted on this forum. This includes user pictures. Use common sense.
  • Illegal Content:
    Providing or asking for information on how to illegally obtain or provide software ("warez") or music is forbidden.
  • Links:
It is permissible to provide links in posts to websites which are informative and pertinent to the content of that post, but any links to inappropriate content will result in immediate suspension or deletion of the user.
  • Cross-posting:
    Posting a thread in more than one forum is annoying and thus not allowed. Just post it once in the correct place.
  • Signature Size:
    To avoid annoyance, signatures should not be more than five lines of text or 100px height. If images are used in a signature, they should be non-contentious.
  • Copyright and ownership:
It is the forum users’ responsibility to ensure they comply with current copyright law with respect to anything posted by them. Users accept full responsibility and liability for their posts on the forum.  Users accept that the forum administration, Whaley Bridge Town Council, Trusted IT as the forum hosts, and moderators will not be held liable in any way for any material posted on the site which may be discovered to fall foul of copyright law, and users accept that any liability from such posts will fall entirely on them.

If you see photos or other content in another members post, don’t panic. This is probably just a misunderstanding and not malicious. A good first step is to contact them directly via the forum and politely ask them to remove it. If that doesn’t work, please file a Copyright Infringement Notice (see below) with the moderators. You may be tempted to post on the forum about what is happening, but that is not the best way to resolve a possible copyright issue. We do not encourage singling out individuals like this on the forum as it could be seen as harassment which is against our rules.

Comments, pictures, messages and any other “content” submitted to the forum are owned by the poster, but in posting on the forum, the poster automatically gives his/her consent for the forum operator and the Whaley Bridge Local History Site or their successor(s), to store, copy, publish, disseminate and reuse the content in perpetuity as they wish, the principle behind such reuse being that it is for the benefit of the forum and the people of Whaley Bridge, and on a non-profit basis.
  • Copyright Infringement Notice: If you believe that your work (or the work of a third party on whose behalf you are entitled to act) has been copied, used, or made available on or through the Whaley Bridge Forum in a way that constitutes copyright infringement of your intellectual property, please provide us with a Copyright Infringement Notice which should include the following written information:
  1. a statement that you have identified material on the Website which infringes your copyright (or infringes the copyright of a third party on whose behalf you are entitled to act, if applicable);
  2. identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed, or, if multiple copyrighted works at a single online site are covered by a single Notice, a representative list of such works at that site;
  3. identification of the material that is claimed to be infringing or to be the subject of infringing activity and that is to be removed or access to which is to be disabled, and information reasonably sufficient to permit us to locate the material (including, for example, a URL and/or screen shot);
  4. your full name, email address, postal address and telephone number on which you can be contacted;
  5. a statement by you that you have a good-faith belief that use of the material in the manner complained of is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
  6. a statement by you that the information in the Notice is accurate, and under penalty of perjury, that the complaining party is authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right that is allegedly infringed; and
  7. a physical or electronic signature (which may be a scanned copy) of a person authorized to act on behalf of owner of the work that is allegedly infringed
  • Individual use of forum content: Individuals wishing to use the forum content outside of the forum should first obtain permission from the person who posted the content before reprinting or republishing elsewhere. Any reprinting or republishing should visibly contain the words “WhaleyBridge.com” and an acknowledgment of the original posters forum name e.g “From a picture submitted to the forum on whaleybridge.com by user xxxx”. Any such use must be strictly on a ‘not for profit’ basis.
  • Banning: If you are banned, you will receive a brief formal email or public message via the forum indicating the reason why you have been banned. No further correspondence will be entered into.
  • Appeal: If you wish to appeal against any decision by the moderators, then please send a written letter – NOT email -  to Whaley Bridge Town Council outlining your reasons and mark it ‘FAO Website Committee’. You should provide full details of why you think your appeal is valid along with your full postal address, telephone number, email address and user name. Your letter will be discussed at the next meeting of that committee. The Committee meets on a quarterly basis. If you have been banned from the forum, then any use of the forum in the meantime will result in a perpetual ban from the forum. If you wish to respond to posts in the meantime, you should do so through the moderators, who will deal with it at their discretion.

  • If you don’t like the rules:
    Please find another forum or create your own.
In short…..
Please be considerate and polite in your use of this forum. Any penalties for the above rules are at the moderation team's discretion. People have been banned(username/IP range) from the site in the past for causing trouble in the forums. Use common sense and make the Whaley Bridge forum a welcoming place which can be used by young and old alike.
Change History:
28/06/11 V1.0 – replaces all previous versions.
04/07/13 V2.2 – replaces version V1.0.
