Thanks for sharing your old photos with those of us living in the far reaches f the universe everyone. I for one have really enjoyed them.

Is Taxal Church the same as St. James Taxal Church? My great great grandfather is buried there, and presumably other Colliers?

I wonder if anyone is interested in taking photos of old cemetery headstones for those of us researching family histories? I know it's not quite on topic, but it seems like a good place to introduce the idea. I'm looking for Colliers, Vernons, Oldfields, and Hancocks.

Hi Martha

Leave the photography to me - I'll see what I can do.  I've got some info on Taxal Memorial Inscriptions  and there's information on Colliers and Vernons but no Oldfields or Hancocks.

I think I've found the MI for your GGG Father's grave (J30) - was he Joseph Collier b1814 in Taxal who married Martha Vernon at Taxal in 1815?  If so, it says on the 1851 Census that Martha was born in Fairfield which is now part of Buxton, so I guess her family could be buried there.  Buxton is in Derbyshire whereas Taxal (St James Church) was in Cheshire (now in Derbyshire).  Cheshire family history records are a lot easier to find than Derbyshire ones.  I've asked Cllr Jon to let you have my email address so please contact me when you get it and I will send you what info I have collected for you.

Thanks Mrs. C. Yes, I found that MI as well, and he is my gggf. I haven't been able to find anything further on Martha Vernon though, except that they were married in 1935. I will email you right now!

Good afternoon Horwich Ender,

The forum has been very quiet of late and there have been few or no contributions from the regular gang.
I myself have not been in great shape since Christmas but it is time to try and get things going once again.

I have been looking in and must say I am a little worried that some of the regulars that I just mentioned may also be not in the best of health.
One example is the late night poet Lady Madonna; have you any information on her?
This is the longest period that she has remained inactive. I suppose they do have access to lap tops at the Priory and the Betty Ford Clinic so we shall have to wait to see if this awakens her from her stupors, sorry slumbers if you are indeed reading this My Lady.
So back to matters in hand and here is a photo of Christ Church which I am not sure has ever been on here before. What a lovely building it really is. It served the community for many years as a place of worship and somewhere to go to be closer to God.
I understand it is now a Council house.

Thanks Norm

Norm,

Don't know why, but recently you seem to be reposting pictures that RSS has sent, that appear on my screen anyway. I can't think why as they are both the same size exactly. In the past RSS pictures appeared as icons and you put them in-line.

Flannel

Yes, it does look strange doesn't it?

As usual there is a reason, this is mentioned elsewhere on the forum, but to save searching here it is.

R.S-S is incapable of resizing photos, and also he is not great at submitting them either. He can submit them to Flickr though. Apart from being able to do that the other advantage is that Flickr resizes them automatically, so seems the best of both worlds. But, and there is always a but, Flickr does not keep them forever.

So the plan is R.S-S uses Flickr to submit them, I grab the photo and repost it to this forum where it is held on the "forum's server" and R.S-S will delete the photo from Flickr.

Simple eh?

Norm

Good evening R. S-S

I must admit I am also a little concerned about Lady Madonna's state of health.

We have always known she likes the odd late night tipple, but ever since the revelation that Chairman Jon the Whaley One was once involved with her furry purse at the Jolly Roger was made public, she has been very quiet and I think this may have tipped her over the edge.

She has previously stated the Betty Ford Clinic is beneath a Lady of her standing so I hope the Priory is attending to her needs and its not too long before she is able to return to the forum.

As far as Christ Church is concerned you are correct in stating it is no longer a place of worship but is now home to the Mayor of the High Peak who is, of course, one of the Whaley Eleven, Cllr David Lomax.

Many thanks for posting another cracking photo which I don't think has been on the forum before.

Another one for your Photo Album Well Known Norm.

On another thread I mentioned the Whaley Bridge Mission or Iron Church as it was known locally.

This is situated at the rear of the School Garage and is used as a workshop.

When Edward Hall built the Holy Trinity the Iron congregation mostly moved just up the road to join this new church.

Shortly afterwards the Iron Church became the Buxton Road Tea Rooms or Derby Tea Rooms.
The building appears on many old photos as football and cricket teams held events there.
But here are a couple of photos just of the building itself when it was the Buxton Road Tea Rooms.

Thanks Norm
