We are chatting at the quiz on Thursday evening, and decided that "Cross Scythes" is a damn strange name for a garage, but a good name for a pub.

Therefore, a question was formed that no one in REMS at Chapel knew the anser to:

Was there ever a pub at Town End in Chapel-en-le-Frith called the Cross Scythes, which subsequently gave its name to Eric Bowers' garage?

Hello Buggyite,

In 1891 the following Commercial Addresses were registered with the Post Office at Chapel-en-le-Frith. They were entitled to have their mail delivered.

Beehive Inn, Combs
The Red Cow, Whitehough
The Hanging Gate, Cockyard
Pack Horse, Tunstead Milton
The Greyhound, Market Place
Rose and Crown, Tunstead Milton
New Inn, Market Place
The Pack Horse, ?
Wagon and Horses, ?
The Swan Inn, ?
Jolly Carter, Sandy Way Head
King’s Arms Hotel, Market place
The Thorn, ?
Oddfellows Arms, Whitehough
Shoulder of Mutton
Royal Oak Hotel
Bull’s Head Hotel (probably Market Place)
Roebuck
Grapes Inn, Burrfield
The Old Packhorse, Town End
Dog Inn
Hat and Feathers, ?

So, sorry but no Cross Scythes at that time.

I have just received a very fine copy of the Clough Inn at Barmour Clough that I have been trying to find for many a long time though.

No Drum & Monkey, Bowden Lane, on that list?

Or for that matter, Cross Keys, Chapel Milton.

Congratulations Buggyite. Your post was the 5000th on the history forum.

There is no prize  so don't get excited. I wonder what will be on here when it goes through 10000 posts.
