Here's a picture of my Grandmother's house Rose Glen, Reddish Road which I'm told won the competition for the best dressed house to celebrate the start of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The prize was five shillings. It's not the best quality quality picture I'm afraid but you can see what a lot of effort went into the sign which says:

GOD BLESS OUR QUEEN LONG MAY SHE REIGN

And all the flags were the correct way up. Nowadays people don't know the difference. It makes my blood boil when I see one upside down and always tell the person responsible.

Yes I agree. There is often mentioned that it being upside down is a sign of distress, but if people don't know then it is a waste of time. I heard that the Red Ensign should be upside down then it is obvious, anyone else heard that?

Another slightly blood boiling moment is people who do not know the difference between I and 1 in roman numerals (Roman Numerals are "eye" not "one"). Curious has got it right with Queen Elizabeth II not 11. Would be silly to say Queen Elizabeth the eleventh
