Hi all, I'm planning to move to Whaley Bridge soon with my family from Stockport.

Can anyone advise the best way to get to know the local area well, as well as historical points that I can show/tell my girls. I know the area a little as I used to work in Whaley many years ago.

Thanks

Hi Marc, and welcome to Whaley Bridge.

I guess first port of call would be our very own local history site  : http://www.whaleybridge.net/localhistory/

The Library has several books of local interest, and others can be purchased at the Footsteps community cafe.  A copy of the Whaley Bridge parish paths booklet would also be useful - try the Post Office.

Cheers

P.S. - Off the cuff, some of things you may wish to seek out - I am sure others can contribute many more

The memorial park

The canal basin and towpath
The old railway incline aka “The Tramlines”
The coal mine airshaft building at the corner of Old and Bings Roads
The “Roosedych”
Bugsworth basin
The dipping stone on Whaley Moor
The reservoir
Taxal church and ford
The cross on Elnor Lane

Welcome Marc, look on the lefthandside of the homepage & you'll see a Local Info tab & under that organisations. That should keep you busy. Failing that several pints of Marsden's down at the Shephards & a curry after always does the trick!

Don't forget Taxal duck pond........if you can find it in the undergrowth.

I'll get my coat.

Well we moved in about a month ago and my wife and I are still surprised by how helpful and friendly everyone is around here.
I've tried a few takeaways, but still to try a curry.
However I have had a pint or 2 in all the pubs! As yet no hangovers, must be the air or the water lol.
