That's a tough one George.
Just guessing, including Bridgemont and Furness but excluding Buxworth ...
Canal: Station Rd, New Rd, Bypass x 2, horse tunnel, Tesco, + footbridges
Railway: A6 near Bridgemont, Bridgemont/Ringstones, Whaley Pit/Hockerley estate, Reservoir Rd, Wharf Rd, Buxton Rd, Bridge over CHPR/Shallcross branch, Old Rd, Chapel Rd + Chapel Rd bridge on Shallcross branch + footbridges
River Goyt: 2 bridges to CPA, Bridge St, Market St, Macclesfield Rd.
Carr Brook: Elnor Lane, Chapel Rd, Buxton Rd
Bridge over CHPR track at Fernilee
So I make it about 25 + footbridges, but there must be some more. Edited by user 02 October 2012 22:37:16(UTC)

This is a much more interesting topic than of late
Wheatsheaf road into the park, past Fernilee Hall towards Fernilee Cottages there is a small road bridge, Fernilee Reservoir overflow Bridge, and if we are counting Bridges that are there but now not used in the same way, there is a lovely old dressed stone bridge in Fernilee on the Old Turnpike above Goyt Vale cottages, there is one in Fernilee carrying the CHPR next to Fernilee Hall , another on the CHPR alongside Fernilee Reservoir and another now filled in but still there next to the toilets at the bottom of Bunsall plain plus dont forget not strictly a bridge but on long hill at the end of Elnor lane over the river, and again further up Long Hill on the corner, they both have rivers flowing underneath! |

Another railway bridge of a sort is where Randall Carr brook goes under the Buxton line at Cadster, close by where the railway goes over Chapel road on the old A6. |

I know exactly where the bridge over the turnpike is! was scouting around there a few weeks ago, curious as to that rounded hump thing along the track.. was it a quarry Shallcross? I noticed the bridge - it's lovely. It's also substantially damaged, as if a large vehicle has pushed the wall over .
There's another one near Fernilee Hall, directly under the Peak District Park boundary stone, and which would have been entered where the campsite is now.
The lovely one near the toilets bottom of Bunsall Cob gives you an idea of the scale of elevation as the trains were winched up the 2 levels. But there's another bridge a 1/3 of the way up the incline -it's like a sheep/cattle creep bridge, and cuts under the road/incline and would have led from Nook Farm ( sadly demolished ) nearby.
We've also got numerous wooden & metal bridges over the Goyt: Taxal, Billy Goat's Gruff further up the valley ( pupils of Bunty Sidebottom will know exactly where that is ) and the bridge over the canal wharf.... can't think of anymore at the moment. |
Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others -even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. |

Hi Ferni
Yes spoil heap and small Quarry, I think it was one of the local sources of Gritstone for the walls, after the enclosure acts of 1777 walling stone was very much required and transport costs were high, many small workings provided local walling stone.
Another Bridge still within the boundaries of couse is Goyt's Bridge. |

Is it a bridge, two bridges or a tunnel ? Between Furness Vale quarry and the canal, a track/footpath passes under both the road and the railway. The footpath leads to Bangs Bridge, the footbridge over the canal. There was once a swing bridge here as well. The footpath then continues alongside the water treatment works towards Waterside where another footbridge crosses the Goyt. The path then joins the road which leads up to Dolly Lane. Just before it passes under the double railway bridges it crosses another bridge which was built to span the unfinished railway line to Whaley Bridge.

A few more Furness Vale bridges : Station footbridge ( don't forget the Whaley station footbridge) ; railway bridge over the footpath between Old Road and the Marina; railway bridge over the track leading to Carr Farm; Carr swing bridge on the canal; Furness Vale aqueduct which carries the canal over a brook which runs parallel with Station Road. Just below Calico Lane, Station Road crosses the old printworks mill race presumably on a bridge and just to the left of this is an old disused span .
The tramway tunnel (or does it count as a bridge) still exists under Buxton Road and under the chippy although it is blocked at both ends.
Has anyone mentioned the various bridges around Bridgemont carrying the by pass over the canal and river?

On checking back I find that Snowy listed the by pass bridges over the canal but not the one over the river,.
Another bridge that is often missed is the aqueduct near Tesco which carries the canal over the Goyt.

Has anyone mentioned the secret tunnel in the very centre of Whaley Bridge?
It's still in great condition and you can walk through it.
I think that at one time Cllr Swift was thinking of taking paid, conducted tours through it to increase the vast wealth of the Council or perhaps his own. Who knows.

Does the pipe which carries Randall Carr Brook over the Goyt (opposite the Surgery) count as a bridge? |
The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct. |

Secret tunnels R. S. S. - is this another of your conundrums ? Could it be an escape route from the Mechanics or are we back at the corn mill ?

Now we are talking!
John, I think a tour is called for. This could be the perfect site for the new housing developments.
