An interesting bit of history here. Who knew Whaley Bridge was the catalyst for the British Cycling Academy ... http://www.telegraph.co....-of-British-cycling.html

Our local cycling history goes back much farther. The High Peak Velocipede Club was formed c 1860 in Furness Vale. This was one of the country's earliest cycling clubs.

Furness Vale2

This time image size was 900 pix wide last time 812 pix, we will see if size matters!

800 pix wide appears to be the best option, the large cycle club image below is 900 pix wide and is too close to being clipped by some browser settings.

Is that a bugle on the shoulder of the 4th from right rider, did he rally the men for a charge on New Mills?

Or perhaps he rode in front to clear the towpath at Bridgemont.

None of that Lycra nonsense then, Tweed jacket order of the day. Note there are bells on the handle bars, so the bugle remains a mystery.

It was common practice in the early days of cycling for the Club Captain to have a bugler to signal his intentions to the rest of the riders.

The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct.
