Was that filmed on a mobile 'phone through a sock?

If that is all Viagra can do I'm glad I don't need the damn stuff.

Hi G.J,

I've put the direct link below.

So which chimney was it that was erected so quickly, and when was this taken?

Cheers

Jon.

Thank you again Jon, It was the "Printshop Chimney" . The Calico Printers Association to give the company it's correct name, at the Bingswood site where Stampiton and Paintmaster now are. Painted on the side of it in enormous letters on the Whaley side was C P A vertically. It was filmed from The Bings in about 1965. In the final shot Harry Mortens farm is just visible ( now his son's, young Geoff and his wife Joan) . I'm sorry about the graininess but had to play it backwards slowly or the whole run would only last about 2 seconds.

Thank you for the film Mr Jackson. I remember watching this great event "live".

The old chimney used to belch out thick black smoke most of the time, but no-one ever complained about it because at the time all the houses had coal fires as well. Quite often the house chimneys would catch fire and every time this happened the housewives would all rush outside to take their washing down from the line before it got covered in soot (it was always the wife's job to do the washing in those days).

Are you sure it was as late as 1965 that it was demolished?  I would have put it about 5 years earlier.

Dear Snowy,
Maybe 1964, but don't forget, even then my dementia was kicking in.

P.S. Isn't it still the wife's job to do the washing?

It appears that the CPA print works was opened at Bingswood around 1873, so it was presumably around then that the erection of the chimney took place.  A bit before my time, but there may have been people who saw both the building and the demolition.

Regarding household chores I must admit the wife takes care of the washing, but this is because I once put a red teeshirt in with all the white things, so everything turned pink and she no longer trusts me to do it properly. She does all the ironing as well.

By the way, does anyone know if there are still any traces of the old chimney, or was the site completely cleared?

Morning all

Re printworks chimney.

Before the one on the photo there was an earlier in the yard in the middle of all the buildings, this was dropped in the early 1930's. The last chimney was dropped on August 15th.1966,I was on Bings Road as well as many of you, unfortunately I was to anxious and took a photo too quickly consequently the chimney looks almost upright. I am trying to attach the photo and anothers before the event. One from the canal basin, one with a hole at the bottom and one looking straight up Here goes.

Dear George, Thanks a million for the photos, I could have sworn that the writing was C P A only. I must have seen it many thousands of times and it is surprising what tricks the old memory plays.I stand corrected. I was probably standing next to you on the Bings that fateful day possibly discussing how well the WB&B Co-op was doing as it nearly owned Whaley didn't it. Who benefitted from all the property that it owned ? There must have been hundreds of houses and shops and outbuildings that were owned by the company.... Who asset stripped?
