A couple of interesting postcards for sale on E Bay at present. The Royal Oak at Taxal and an early view of Horwich End looking up Macclesfield Road. They are a bit pricey but small images can be viewed by going to E Bay and searching for Whaley Bridge.

Have had a look at these - very interesting. Never thought of looking on e-bay for Whaley pictures. I agree though that the prices are a little high! Don't think you'd have to pay that much at a local antique fair.

Good evening Parabuild,
Those photographs are way over priced. I regularly look on ebay and the internet for old photographs. I put bids in a few months ago on some postcards in Chapel and they all went for over 50 quid. So you will see there is a massive interest in local interest and old photos.
I have already got those photographs that are on ebay but I’ll put a better one of The Royal Oak (The Chimes of Taxal) below for your enjoyment and entertainment.

Good grief !
What was going on there? A wedding? A family party? The after-service turn-out from St James'. Any ideas about what year this photo was taken?
I've never been in the Chimes but I know my family went there quite a few times in the late 60's/early 70's. Have a few hilarious photos of "turning-out" time one Sunday afternoon when in-laws were the little the worse for wear !! Happy days !

I don’t know what they were all doing there but I can reliably inform you that they were not awaiting the arrival of Britain’s official hangman.

The photo most probably dates to circa 1910-1914. I will hazard a guess due to the date weather dress etc most likely the Coronation in 1911. It could however be a local event but there were certainly large events in and around town on Coronation day.

Hello and welcome to the forum Curtaintwitcher,
A large gathering indeed and the dress suggests you are probably correct about the dates. But most folk celebrated the Coronation down Whaley where there were bands and decorations and many old photos recorded the event.
I think it was more likely something to do with The Royal Oak or St James’ Church.
There was an equally large crowd to welcome England’s Chief Executioner but that wasn’t until 1950 so we can count that one out I think.

And I imagine that they wouldn't all be "hanging about" like that!

Thank you very much for the welcome R.S.S.! The event and reason for the gathering shall probably remain unknown. I do have copies of the photo's you correctly refer too. The local territorial battalion 6th Sherwoods paraded in Whaley Bridge on Coronation day 1911. The Colonel of the local Volunteers was Edward Hall whose family where very involved with St James Taxal. It is quite possible that a service was held at St James before or after the events in town. That so many old photographs were taken on this day leads me to think it is very possible that this is one of such photo's. Pure speculation however on my part.

Hmm,
Not too sure about that one Curtaintwitcher. Colonel Hall had a major fall out with Sam Evans and refused to attend St James Church thereafter. He left saying: “Me and my men shall build our own church.”
And he went off and built Holy Trinity on Buxton Road.
I think Holy Trinity dates back to 1905 and the Trinity Church Hall opposite dates from 1911; the date of the Coronation.

I have not got my notes on the fall out at hand. Col Edward Hall senior died in 1916 and I think was burried at Taxal St James. His son now too a Colonel Edward Hall jnr laid the foundation stone for the new church on Buxton Rd in 1922. The Sam Evans you mention was a most unusual clergy.
