I've attached another photo just re-discovered after many years in a safe place.
We think it was taken at Brick Barn Pit – but where was that then? And does anybody recognise any of the workers?

Nice picture Mrs C but I have searched various internet resources and cannot find Brick Barn Pit. I have looked at the Peak District Mines Historical Society which has a comprehensive list of coal and mineral mines as in 1896 as well as other sites. Brick Barn Pit may of course have started at a later date or may have been known by another name. I shall have to pass this quest on to another of our investigators.

David,
Your memory is starting to fail quite alarmingly. Have you thought of having yourself checked out?
You have searched for information on Brick Barn Pit and can’t find anything?
Try reading my post 14 within your thread The Times Archive, specifically addressed to you, as long ago as Feb 09.
Really David you must try to keep up.

This little old map shows the location of Shallcross Hall Colliery (Brickbarn Pit).
You will see the allotments which are now Vaughan Road, Manor Road and Buxton Road all known collectively by locals as Flanders after the WW1 battle fields. There are 2 reasons for the name Flanders:
1 The site was so muddy it was like a battle field.
2 Any returning soldiers from Flanders were almost guaranteed a house there.
You can see the incline that took the coal down to the sidings and also the old tramway from the pits to the Botany.
The site of Walker Pit is also shown on the map. I wonder who owns that piece of land now.
Maybe somebody knows and will be able to tell us. It would be very interesting I’m sure.
