I don’t want to be morbid or put anyone off their Sunday lunch but this is on the historical side of the forum. So:
Taken from John Warren’s Diary.
1864 Aug 19 A terrible accident at Furness station, when Daniel Pickford Cook, schoolboy son of the Furness station master was killed by the 3.56 passenger mail train from Buxton. The boy, who was nine years of age, was returning from school and ran past the end of the ballast train which had stopped for loading. The engine was blowing off steam, which prevented the boy from hearing the oncoming train. The boy was struck by a projecting crank on the side of the engine and decapitated.
On the following Saturday, an inquest was held at the Soldier Dick before Mr Johnson and a jury, who returned a verdict of accidental death. The jury recommended that in future two men should be on duty at the station, one to each turnstile, in order to prevent the reoccurrence of a similar accident.
1864 Oct 25 Henry Heathcote killed on the railway at Furness opposite the Shady Grove.
1866 Jul 27 Joseph Fernley was run over with the engine at Furness station.

That is the earliest photo of Furness signal box that I have seen. Thanks for posting that R.S-S. I now have a few additions to make to the digital model.

This digital model of Furness Vale Station is now complete. I have to stop here or I will end up modelling the entire village. I have tried to represent the station as it might have appeared in 1960. With only a few photographs to work from I will no doubt have made mistakes and would welcome corrections. The Google Sketchup computer file is now too large to e.mail; I will gladly send a CD to any member who has Sketchup installed and would like a copy. The program is free and can be downloaded from Google and will enable panning, zooming and walk around of the model. parabuild attached the following image(s):

Very good, great software but I am sure it's down to the creator as well. 
David, on another note, I cannot view your thread on Local History. I get a sort of server error. Is it only me? because you seem to add posts now and again so it must work for you. Anyone else having problems?

I get the same error,. too. If I recall correctly, its caused when somebody deletes the first post. |

...... and according to The National Archives "old for new" currency converter, it would cost £14.27 in equivalent terms today.
Obviously, today it is dearer - now there's a surprise !!

Curious,
The railway companies originally offered 3 classes of travel, first, second and third class, but this was standardised into just two classes in the early part of the twentieth century. For some reason, it was second class that was abandoned, so the 2 choices were first or third class. By the time of this abandonment, third class had upholstered seats, lighting, and roofs. This means that third class was basically "not first class", and not something dreadful like steerage on ships. This arrangement carried on into the 1960s at least, until British Railways finally got round to renaming them first and standard. |

Right up to the closure of the booking office on Birch Vale station, first class single from Birch Vale to Strines tickets were still "GC & MId Joint" ones. That dates the tickets as pre-1922, rather like 2 of R S-S's 3. Maybe there were minimum quantities for any printing batch. |
