I am extremely concerned that British Waterways has applied for Listed building planning consent to make alterations to the Grade 2 listed building which is the horse tunnel on the Peak forest Canal at Bridgemont. This is the underpass by which horses changed sides on the canal towpath.
At present the slopes are more or less as left in 1800. The surface under the aqueduct was concreted when sewers were put in decades ago.
BW want to alter the surfaces and put in handrails. This would destroy the horse tunnel as a building worthy of listing.
The surfaces of the slopes were made with gritstone pieces to make what most people call cobbles. This should be the method used for repair where needed. For over two hundred years we have not needed handrails. Why now?
If the proposals are accepted then the building should be removed from the Buyildings List.
Everyone should oppose this vandal;ism and to do this write to High Peak planning Department and to English Heritage as well as to our MP.

I agree replacing the cobbles would be a better idea but I'm guessing this would be too costly at the present time. I believe they are burying the cobbles on one side so they could be, at least in theory, restored later. (I may be wrong). This is not a building its more of a listed structure and most will be intact (possibly enhanced by tree cutting & I believe pointing) after the work so I do not see that the addition of a new hand rail should affect that status! Though I do have to agree, I do not see why its needed, after all is there a handrail up Whaley Lane? Much steeper!

Hello Tyke. Please re-read my posting. I absolutely did not say I wanted the cobbles replacing, If they are replaced the whole point of listed building status will have been negated. Adding handrails would have the same effect. These were the thrust of my posting. Edited by user 08 April 2009 10:18:41(UTC)

BW's contractors have repaired the wall of the Northern slope of the Grade 2 listed horse tunnel on the Peak Forest Canal at Bridgemont with modern, hard cement and not the lime mortar which should have been used. They have also filled in the missing setts on the slope not with gritstone setts but with limestone chippings.
This shows they have no idea of their responsibilities towards a listed building.

Is there any news of the proposed repairs/restoration. It is some months since the planning application and no sign of any progress. The slopes and tunnel are frequently used routes linking the towpaths as well as providing access to Tesco's. After just a little rain it is necessary to pick ones way through pools of muddy water. I don't like wearing wellies to go shopping. The area is also strewn with discarded wrapping from purchases from the store. Although not Tesco property, it is a shame that they don' have any sense of responsibility and tidy up occassionally.

I think you are dreaming if you think that the words "Tesco" and "sense of responsibility" go together! Edited by user 24 September 2009 21:28:47(UTC)

Actually when I walked thru yesterday on a quick walk back from the Navvy. It was quite clean, I skidded on the stones as usual, just popping to Tesco for the usual "While you pass can you get me?" trip.
But again I noticed the smell. Now I am no expert on drains, but the pen and ink was bad. Not the first time either. Well the drain is low but should it smell like that? Hope it all gets cleaned up soon.

The smell wasn't too bad yesterday Snoopy. The water level is rather low and some moored boats look as though they are grounded. Perhaps the lack of water in Toddbrook has something to do with water levels although it should still be topped up from Coombs. The cleanliness of the canal depends on a flow of water although this is barely perceptable. If there is insufficient water to reach the spillways then I'm not surprised if it pen and inks.
