A few weeks back, we had a talk on the Normandy landings and Whaley's connections with the last war. We followed this up with a discussion about memories and connections with the war. I am interested in collecting information about wartime Whaley Bridge. Interesting snippets emerged from the group like memories of watching the barage balloons going up over Stockport from the Bings: where the air-raid shelters were in Whaley: where the Civil Defence Office was - just along into Wharf Road from the bank; connections to Rowbothams Engineering which was where Walkere and Howell is and which made parts for Bailey Bridges etc. Can anyone tell me about any other connections to wartime in Whaley Bridge or anything about what was going on in Whaley around 1939-45. I believe the main Civil Defence Office for Whaley was in Brinnington Road Stockport - does anyone know anything about this?
