On the original Manchester To Buxton Turnpike is a milestone marking a distance of 18 miles from Manchester. To aid a bit of research can anybody help with the location. I imagine it will be on the Buxton side of Whaley Bridge.

Mr parabuild

If the 18-mile marker is a stone somewhere in this area, what defines the Manchester start point of the measurement, the Town hall, Ardwick Green, Piccadilly Gardens, or is there a stone at some point on the A6?

I always undertood mileposts to be measured from the Town Hall in Albert Square.  The milestone in Furness Vale, that near Crescent Drive reads "Manchester  16"  so I am looking for a stone 2 miles further south.

There's one on the bridge near the White Hart but I cannot remember what information it has.

That sounds like the 17 mile stone Mr Jackson.  Many thanks, I'm getting closer

The Ordnance Survey map shows "MS" symbols on Long Hill just below where Elnor Lane joins on at Fernilee, then again a little higher up where a bend has been taken out, leaving the original route as a layby, overlooking Fernilee reservoir.

Now the problem I have with this is that I would imagine the distance between these two milestones is somewhat less than a mile, but the distance from the "Elnor Lane" one is rather more than a mile from the White Hart.

Not sure where this leaves you, David.

Many thanks everyone, I think I have now found the location I was looking for.  It will be explained in a future thread.

Jack.

Milestones are notorious for their inaccuracy. I remember back in the fifties when Alf Tupper - the Tough of the Track - was struggling to meet the Olympic qualifying time by running between two milestones. Then he met the county surveyor who pointed out that they were 2000 yards apart so that Alf was actually running sub four minute miles.
The optimist believes that Whaley Bridge is the best place in the world to live. The pessimist fears he might be correct.

By chance, I recorded the words on the bridge near the White Hart the other day:

BUXTON 7 MILES

STOCKPORT 10 MILES

DISLEY 4 MILES

But what does 'WP 1808' near the centre of the bridge mean?
