I have by some been elevated to royalty status on this Forum being calling, My Lord and King Jake cnut (I must say I have always been concerned about the spelling of that last word).

I was therefore wondering what has gone wrong today on my 58th birthday. I have noticed that High Peak Radio did not play the Anthem before the eight o’clock news this morning and the royal post box was very short of cards an pressy’s. The radio station didn’t even play my favorite record, which by the way is “Sympathy for the Devil”.

I have not heard about The Trooping of the Colour ceremony or any other high jinks to mark this auspicious day, what has gone wrong?

I am due to abdicate next month so my son who is doing a media course at Stockport college thought he would try and cut into the Ladder hill transmitter so I could address the local populous but he appears to be having technical problems (you just can’t get the quality of education that you used to these days).

He did suggest that Youtube might be an alternative method of reaching out to you all, but having seen Gordon Browns recent attempt to use it to reform MPs’ expenses I think I will give it a miss.

Well I hope you all have a very good day, mine will be bloody miserable. The trick now I believe at my age is to try and make sure I see my 59th birthday.

Jake

I do hope this is taken in the spirit it is meant. Please do join in on this Forum we have many looking but not so many contributing.

Sir,

Now then I am getting like my very good friend Fedup. I also am fed up as King Sceptic Jake Cnut the first says nobody seems able or is unwilling to join this excellent, nay moderate forum. I am particularly fed up with dealing with local history when no one replies.

This however is about very recent history and it seems that our leader’s mind or memory or both are deserting him. I will once again remind you, My Lord, the reason for your elevation to royalty.

Some time ago it was noticed that a tree had been cut down in our Park and rather than cutting it off level at the bottom the Tree surgeon had carved the remains into a seat.
At the time I wondered if it had been carved in this fashion to replace the wench bench, lost long ago that was built around the tree in Wier Field. We even thought that after the recent nuptials in the Caribbean the new wench bench might be christened by Councillor Mrs Brunt.
However, she never, sadly, got the chance. For, if you remember we were discussing the possibility of a lasting tribute to you in the Park and Fedup thought that it was more of a throne than a wench bench. Our friend Incredulous seized the opportunity to liken the situation to King Canute who attempted to stop the tide rising without much success. But he did think that if you sat in that old tree stump in all you finery and brasso treated chain of office you would have more success with holding back the River Goyt. He also pointed out, quite correctly, that the more familiar spelling of Canute is Cnut. So that is why you are named as you are. Surely you are elated that your people think of you as a Cnut?

I shall deal with your birthday celebrations, or perhaps lack of them, later today if I get chance. But in the meantime: Happy Birthday from me and many more to come.

Your obedient servant,

R. S-S

Many thanks for the Birthday wishes.

I am pleased to say I still remember the situation well. Incredulous did indeed pick out the tree stump as my royal seat and his likening me to King Canute was an honour, I also took on board the more familiar spelling "cnut". I do appreciate that the spelling is correct but it has never really sat well because the simple fact is that it can be misinterperated by some. I have and do live with this great title in memory of our good friend.

I even remember him suggesting what should be done to the reservior wall, all these things are a fine complement to the esteem that I am held in, and are not forgotten.

I am sure that when we discussed the royal seat somebody was quite keen for me to try it out, when, at the time the river was in full flood. I did of course suspect a plot to get rid of me. Although you did show great faith in my capabilty as Leader to turn the flow of water back I knew my limitations so held back from taking on the task, if I'm not mistaken we have also had a gunpowder plot that came to light on the old forum, so my popularity is not all encompassing.

I look forward to your further comments should you get some free time later today.

Your Leader

King Sceptic Jake Cnut

I know what you are saying regarding your Local History contributuions, it is disappointing, we must have loads of people out there who can add thier own and their families input to these discussions sadly mine is limited as I have only been here about 24 years and am still considered a "TOWNIE" by some.

What can I say King Sceptic Jake Cnut? How could your humble servants have missed such a momentous day as your birthday?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OH ROYAL PERSONAGE!!!!

I shouldn't worry about your next birthday - having just listened to the news, we'll probably all be dead from the dreaded Swine 'Flu virus by that time! Just like we were with the dreaded SARS virus, and dreaded Chicken virus!

A good morning to all viewers of this forum,

As Jake says this forum is here for everyone to use and if I can use it than I imagine it would be well within the capabilities of most people.
It is the people’s forum if you like; you can come on and ask questions, complain, gather information, poke fun at Jake (sorry Jake) and all manner of other things.

On the last forum which was unregulated there were lots of new topics and replies not only on a daily basis but replies would come within the hour sometimes. It was excellent until spoiled by a minority.

Also on the last forum both myself and Incredulous were concerned that we did not hog or monopolise that forum but we generally posted on local history subjects which I think most people are interested in. I certainly hold that view today but there are only a few contributors so the few of us who do participate are doing so to keep the interest up.
I have not kept any copies of those previous topics and I don’t know if there is a record held anywhere but I hope there is. There was no way of knowing how many views there were of a particular post or topic but people were talking about it in Whaley.

So let’s get it going again and make it as popular as before.

But use it don’t abuse it.

Thank you,

R. S-S
