The local history thread is a little quiet at the moment and so I thought I would throw this one into the "pool" and see what comes out !

I believe that the tradition of election of a Cotton Queen was a big deal in the  30's and was a competition for young women between the ages of 16 - 26 who worked in the cotton industry, organised in conjunction with the Daily Despatch and sponsored by the cotton industry.

I seem to recall my auntie talking about Marjorie Mason, from New Mills, who was the Cotton Queen of !938/39.  I get the impression she may have been related in some way.  Does anyone have any information or points of view on this subject.  I gather it was a really big deal at the time and the young ladies who won were given various types of training to enable them to carry out their duties.

I have looked at the following website which gives a little information:  http://www.boltonrevisit....uk/s-cotton-queens.html

Please pile in with your views !!

The person who wrote that must've got out of the wrong side of the bed on that day !! Faces like muffins ?... reminiscent of a well-appointed bunloaf? What a patronising twerp.

Good morning, Gnatalee,

Sorry about the quality of the photo but you should still be able to separate the muffins from the bun loaves. Well hopefully anyway.
