Over the past 2 or 3 weeks I have read all these glowing reports about the Furness Vale Chippy and been thinking I must get along there one day. But with one thing and another I've not bothered to get myself into gear and get down there. Anyway this evening I decided to go and try this brilliant chippy so many of you have been raving about so I brought home fish and chips with mushy peas.

WOW!  Absolutely wonderful!   A very tasty meal of generous proportions at a good price. I certainly will visit there again.

A minor niggle, and it is only minor, I would have liked the batter to be slightly crispier as Jon pointed out earlier.

Long may this establishment provide us with the great traditional British dish!

I should be careful recommending this establishment if I were you. Next thing you know, Techy and Wily will have you down as the owner and then the taxman will be after you for this phantom business.

I have had good service from Trusted IT and recommended their services, does this mean I own them as well?

I've not yet tried this new chip shop yet, I am a bit frightened to get the buggy out into traffic ,but I hope it will be as good as Stan Crompton's dads chippy was. After all he was in competition with Arthur Howe nearby so they both had to be good on quality and price. ( I think Stan's grandson plays cricket???)

Yet another comment from High Peak Harry under the topic heading “New Chippy.” Now there's a surprise!

High Peak Harry, it would appear you have still not stated what your involvement with Furness Vale chippy is. The reason we ask the question is that certain members of this forum are convinced you are in some way involved with the chippy at Furness and as such your comments on this subject (of which there have been many) could be construed as biased.

Please will you answer the following question:

What is your involvement (other than as a customer) with the Furness Vale Fish and Chip Shop?

You may state that you have no connection with the establishment and if this is the case we will know you are telling porkies!

I have no more connection with this establishment than I do with The Crispy Cod at New Mills or The Village Fryery on Canal Street.

Perhaps you would care to ask the relevant owners, just to satisfy your curiosity?

I also refer you to my comments concerning Trusted IT. On the other hand it may be that I am the High Peak Dragon and own every business which I use and recommend!

Good evening High Peak Harry.

Why do we need to go to three Fish and Chip shops to get an answer to our question?

Kindly answer the question then all the members of this forum will know of your connection to the chippy.

What is your involvement (other than as a customer) with the Furness Vale Fish and Chip Shop?

I think you'll find, in English Law, (second time this week my legal qualities have been called upon!)  that I do not have to provide evidence to prove my innocence. You, my friend, have to provide evidence to prove my guilt.

As you see it that is.

Good night, ladies and gentlemen. And Wily.

Some people have far too much time on their hands. The people who know the background to this find it hilarious by the way.

Has anyone seen the atricious sign above the new chippy. A whale wallowing on a bed of bales of straw??? I suppose the link could be Whale-hay???

A thought for certain individuals who have too much time on their hands and/or are predisposed to come up with fanciful suggestions.

Suppose for a nano-second that I am the owner of the chippy (I'm not, but let's not facts get in the way), what would be wrong with promoting the chippy on here? The BBC allow all manner of advertising books, films etc. on chat shows.

Now, back to the real world (I appreciate that's difficult for some of you). If you use a local business and find their products and services to be of the highest order, is it wrong to support them both as a customer and to get more people to use them. I think not. I refer you  to a previous post that I didn't know anyone in that shop before it opened, the fact that I find them extremely polite, professional and offer good service and food is enough for me to recommend them to all.

I know some people won't believe me but they won't be up at this time yet, the effects of last night's hallucinogenic substances will still be present.

Incidentally, Bartak is similar to another word beginning with B and with a K towards the end, perhaps that is where the phrase 'Talking Bartaks' originated.

And as for Wily...

Perhaps the font of all historical knowledge R. S-S (I'm blowing his trumpet now), could help us with this matter.

Thanks: 3 times

The new sign looks to me like one of my neighbours goldfish, stranded on a pile of sticks. Not an appealing repast.

I have also seen the large Orange Fish which does appear to be out of character with the surrounding area. I am not sure how long this fish has been there but I would be interested to know if a structure of this kind would require planning permission.

Cllr Jake Walsh is the man to answer your question. He is well up to speed on planning matters and he is one of the reasons the Shepherd's smoking shelter had to be removed and replaced with the umbrella's. I am sure it won't be long before Jake has an answer for you.

The sign you refer to is also to be found at Bennet's, New Mills. This has been up for around 4 years. As High Peak BC are responsible for both sites I don't see how it can be a problem, it's not as though the A6 is a particularly beautiful area. I could understand it if it was in Bakewell or Hayfield.

I suppose the council could ask both owners to apply retrospectively (notwithstanding that neither are in conservation zones), but as one has been up for so long, I can't see how the council would be bothered. Particularly seeing as the economic climate is, any owner would argue the case that they were trying to build up their business in difficult times.

This is only my opinion and I know of lots of these signs in various parts of the country and none have been removed.

Here he is again, High Peak Harry, the official spokesperson for the Whaley Bridge Forum on all Chip Shop related matters.

I think the difference you will find with Bennett's and the Furness Vale Chippy is that one is in New Mills and the other falls within a ward of the Whaley Bridge Town Council.

You may be aware the WBTC take a particularly dim view of situations where correct planning procedures are not followed. I think you may find that the landlady of the Shepherd's Arm's did try and argue that she was trying to build up her business in difficult economic times, but this did not stop the smoking shelter being demolished.

Harry, I am not sure your opinion carries much weight in the corridors of power in the Mechanics or High Peak Borough Council but it may be that the fish doesn't need planning permission or alternatively planning permission has already been obtained.

We await the comments of Jake who will, no doubt, be able to update us of the current position.

The way I see this is fairly simple.

The premises obtained planning permision for change of use from a commercial premises to a chippy. The original building will have had signage and that would need to be replaced, as long as those signs are changed and they are reasonable, not outlandish and out of keeping in the area, permanently lit or in a conservation area then I see it as a done job. One has to be aloud to promote ones business using signage.

I don't see a problem except that from a personal point of view I think a Whale / Fish on a bed of chips says what the shop does but it is a bit tacky for my own personal taste. The planners would also have a bit of difficulty complaining as has been pointed out the same sign is already in use in the area. I would just ask the owner to make sure they turn it off when the shop is closed.

Jake
